The Best Healthy Banana Bread Recipe You'll ... - Real Simple image

If you think banana bread has to be an indulgent dessert, think again. Here, a healthier banana bread is made possible with the use of whole-wheat flour, applesauce, and almond milk. These simple swaps give the classic quick bread an extra boost of fiber, vitamins, and a lot less sugar—and we promise no one will be able to tell the difference. When it's finished baking, slice up and serve as is (read: warm and perfect) or give it a coating of cream cheese or Greek yogurt and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Number Of Ingredients 10

⅓ cup unsweetened applesauce
¼ cup honey
2 tablespoons light brown sugar
2 large eggs
3 large ripe bananas, mashed (about 1½ cups)
¼ cup unsweetened almond milk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 ½ cups white whole-wheat flour

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8-by-4 inch loaf pan.
  • In a large bowl, combine the applesauce, honey, and brown sugar. Add the eggs and beat well. Stir in the mashed bananas and almond milk. Add the baking soda, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon salt and stir.
  • Gradually fold the flour into the banana mixture until just combined (do not overmix).
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean, 45-50 minutes. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup white sugar
2 eggs, beaten
¼ cup butter, melted
3 bananas, mashed

Steps:

  • Grease and flour two 7x3 inch loaf pans. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In one bowl, whisk together flour, soda, salt, and sugar. Mix in slightly beaten eggs, melted butter, and mashed bananas. Stir in nuts if desired. Pour into prepared pans.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 1 hour, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
