BEST HOMEMADE SLOPPY JOES RECIPE | MYRECIPES

Best Homemade Sloppy Joes Recipe | MyRecipes image

Once you try these homemade sloppy Joe’s, there’s no going back to the can. Sloppy Joe’s have secured their place as a tried-and-true family favorite for good reason—they’re quick, they’re easy, and they’re a weeknight dinner the whole family can get behind. Our homemade version is simply a wholesome, full-flavored rendition of the savory-sweet sandwich you know and love from childhood. A blend of ground chuck and ground sirloin provides just the right level of beefy flavor and richness to stand up to the sweetened tomato sauce. Be sure to chop your onion, carrot, and bell pepper as finely as you can so that they’ll blend seamlessly into the mix (and pickier eaters won’t even know they’re there).

Provided by Robby Melvin

Total Time 35 minutes

Yield Serves 6 (serving size: 1 sandwich)

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 tablespoon olive oil
8 ounces ground chuck
8 ounces ground sirloin
1 cup finely chopped sweet onion (from 1 medium onion)
½ cup finely chopped green bell (from 1 small pepper)
½ cup finely chopped carrot (from 1 medium carrot)
2 garlic cloves, minced
¼ cup dry red wine
2 cups crushed tomatoes (from 1 [28-oz.] can)
1 ½ tablespoons light brown sugar
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons kosher salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon crushed red pepper
6 hamburger buns, toasted and split in half

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high; add ground chuck and sirloin, and cook 5 minutes, stirring often and breaking up meat as you stir. Add onion, bell pepper, carrot, and garlic; cook, stirring often, until meat is cooked through and vegetables are very soft, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Add wine, and cook, stirring often, until liquid is evaporated, 3 minutes. Stir in crushed tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper. Bring to a boil over medium-high, reduce to low and simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Divide mixture evenly on the bottom of buns, top with bun top, and serve immediately.

Prep Time 5 minutes

Cook Time 30 minutes

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 onion , finely chopped
2 small red peppers or yellow peppers, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves , crushed
400g minced beef
2 x 400ml cans chopped tomatoes
2 tbsp chipotle or smoky barbecue sauce
4 cheese slices
6 burger buns
crispy onions , to serve
iceberg lettuce , to serve

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep frying pan, then fry the onion, pepper and garlic for 8-10 mins until softened. Add the mince, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as you go, and stir until it browns all over. Tip in the tomatoes and chipotle, or barbecue sauce, and add a little seasoning. Simmer for 10-15 mins until the sauce has thickened.
  • Put the cheese slices on top of the mince and cover with a lid for 2 mins to let it melt into the sauce. Pile into the buns with the crispy onions, and lettuce on the side for scooping up the extra sauce.
