Candy Sugar Dots (old fashioned) | Just A Pinch Recipes image

I remember these as a little girl..picking them off the papers eating one by one. Something about these little treasures brought me such joy. These are Easy, fun..and another project that can be done with your children or grand children..brings me back to about 1955 when I ate them for the first time..it seems like only yesterday! Photos are my own.

Prep Time 5 minutes

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 cup(s) confectioner's sugar
5 tablespoon(s) warm water
2 teaspoon(s) meringue powder
1/2 teaspoon(s) vanilla (you will add other extracts also, read below)
- food coloring
- white copy paper & food safe squeeze bottles

Steps:

  • Lay copy paper out on a flat surface. Have squeeze bottles handy as well. I used 5 pieces of copy paper and actually could have gotten a 6th sheet filled if I had used all the mixture....decided 5 was enough for me.
  • In a medium bowl combine all ingredients and beat with an electric mixer at medium speed for 5-6 minutes. *Icing should fall in ribbon-like streams when dipping spoon into bowl and allowing it to fall back off the spoon into the bowl. The ribbon should sit on surface for about 3 seconds before melting back into the mixture. (I mixed it for 6 minutes and it was perfect)
  • Divide icing mixture into 3 small bowls, tint one with yellow, one with blue and one with red food coloring. Each bowl will need two drops of food coloring to get colors as shown in the picture above. I added a small amount of lemon extract to the yellow mixture, small amount of almond extract to the blue, and to the red, which will end up PINK...I added raspberry extract. You want to achieve yellow, pink and blue dots.
  • Now carefully pour mixture into squeeze bottles..if you only have one, then do all that color first, then rinse bottle and add next color.
  • You will want to do one color at a time on the paper leaving spaces for adding other two colors. You want them in rows as shown in my picture..then add the other colors going next to the first color, etc.. (See pictures)
  • Squeeze bottle gently, mixture will be thick enough that as you squeeze only a small dot will drop onto the copy paper..you will get the hang of it as you go. Not complicated..fun actually. As you can see my lines aren't perfect..but do kids care, NO!
  • Once you have finished all the dot candies allow them to set up for at least 6 hours or overnight. This takes time so kids have to be patient for it is not something you can eat right away. Once completely dry and set..cut into long strips as shown. Enjoy!
