This spicy, Air Fryer Chicken Sandwich inspired by Chick-fil-a is made with lean chicken breast brined in pickle juice and buttermilk, served with pickles and sriracha mayo – SO good!

2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (16 ounces )
1 cup 1% buttermilk
1 cup pickle juice
1 large egg (beaten)
Kosher salt
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
olive oil spray
4 tablespoons light mayo
1 tablespoon sriracha
12 dill pickle chips
4 whole wheat potato rolls (such as Martins)

Steps:

  • Pound out the thicker end of the chicken breast to make the thickness even on both ends, about 1/2-inch thick, this will ensure the chicken cooks even, then cut each breast in half to make 4 pieces.
  • Whisk buttermilk and pickle juice in a bowl.
  • Add chicken and toss to coat; cover with plastic wrap and chill at least 6 hours or overnight.
  • Combine flour, garlic powder, paprika, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and cayenne pepper in a shallow bowl.
  • Whisk egg in another bowl.
  • Line the air fryer basket with an air fryer parchment liner (these are sold on Amazon, look for parchment with the holes).
  • Working with one chicken breast at a time, dip chicken in flour mixture, shaking off excess. Then into the egg and back into the flour, using the back of a fork to coat well so it adheres.
  • Shake excess then transfer to the prepared air fryer basket and spray tops with oil. (For best results, let the chicken sit 15 minutes or refrigerated longer help keep the breading on)
  • Air fry in batches as needed 380F until golden and cooked through, about 15 to 18 minutes, turning halfway depending on the thickness, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the breast reads 165°F.
  • Meanwhile combine sriracha and mayo in a small bowl.
  • To assemble sandwiches, place the mayo on the top of rolls, place the chicken on the bottom roll followed by the pickle chips and tops of rolls.

This copycat recipe for Chick-Fil-A Crispy Chicken Sandwich is just like the real thing, but even better because the chicken is cooked in the air fryer. The result is a crispy piece of chicken without all the oil used in deep frying. Toast your favorite hamburger buns, add the crispy chicken and a couple of pickles, and you have a hearty sandwich. Serve with a side of Air Fryer French Fries and a sparkling water and you are set!

2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, halved and pounded
½ cup pickle juice
½ cup milk
2 eggs
1 cup all purpose flour
1 tablespoon powdered sugar
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon kosher salt
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
cooking oil spray
4 hamburger buns, toasted
8 pickle slices

Steps:

  • Place chicken in a large bowl and pour in pickle juice. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat air fryer to 340°F (170°C). Whisk milk and eggs together in a bowl until well combined. Mix flour, powdered sugar, paprika, salt, pepper, and garlic powder together in a separate bowl. Remove chicken from pickle juice and discard pickle juice. Coat chicken in egg mixture and then dip into flour mixture, ensuring chicken is completely coated. Shake off excess flour. Spray air fryer basket or rack (depending on model) with cooking oil. Place chicken side-by-side inside air fryer basket or rack, working in batches if needed, and lightly mist chicken with cooking spray oil. Cook chicken in the air fryer for 6 minutes. Flip chicken, lightly mist with additional cooking oil spray, and cook for 6 minutes more. Increase temperature of air fryer to 400°F (200°C) degrees and continue cooking until chicken is no longer pink in the center and is crispy on the outside, about 4 minutes more on each side. Carefully remove chicken from air fryer and serve on toasted buns with 2 pickle slices on each sandwich.
