- Gingerbread Syrup (yield is approximately 1/2 gallon):
- Crack or smash the dried spices (do not grind).
- Toast dry spices in a dry saucepan over mediumhigh heat, until aromatic.
- Cool pan, then add water and bring to a boil; allow to boil for 3 minutes.
- Lower heat and add sugar, ginger and molasses and heat again until simmering and sugar has dissolved.
- Cool, then pour through a fine mesh strainer to remove graininess of spices and bottle.
- Snowball Old Fashioned:.
- In a mixing glass, combine all ingredients with cracked ice and stir well.
- Strain into a Miracle double rocks glass, zest lemon over drink then add ice snowball.

This is a very old recipe. A lot of people probably have it. I got it from an old church cookbook the first year I was married because I wanted to make it for my husband's birthday. His birthday is in January and a Snowball cake seemed perfect. I have been making it for him for many years for his birthday. It is his favorite. I recently made one for a Christmas Dinner because I think it makes a beautiful Christmas Cake as well.

- Preheat oven to 350° and line a large cookie sheet with parchment. In a large bowl, mix flour, walnuts, granulated sugar, salt, and vanilla. Add butter and, using your hands, combine everything until mixture resembles a coarse meal. Form dough into small balls and place on prepared cookie sheet. Bake 15 minutes. When they’re still warm but cool enough to touch, roll cookies in powdered sugar. Set aside on a rack to cool completely. When cool, dust again in powdered sugar.
