Old Fashioned ShooFly Cake Recipe - Food.com image

This cake smells sooo good. The ginger and spices really give it a nice kick. I'm not a fan of ShooFly pie.. but this cake is a keeper.

Total Time 1 hours 10 minutes

Prep Time 20 minutes

Cook Time 50 minutes

Yield 1 9X13 cake

Number Of Ingredients 12

3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1/2 cup butter
1 3/4 cups boiling water
3/4 cup baking molasses
1 tablespoon baking soda

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Grease and flour a 9-by-13-inch baking pan.
  • Mix the flour, spices, salt and sugars, then cut in the shortening and butter with a pastry blender or similar tool until the mixture is the consistency of fine crumbs.
  • Set aside 1 cup of the mixture.
  • In another bowl, pour the boiling water over the molasses and stir until dissolved.
  • Stir in the baking soda.
  • When the bubbling subsides, add to the dry ingredients and stir until smoothly blended.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  • Give the pan a good thunk to settle contents, and drag a knife a few times through the center of the batter from the outside to the middle to help the cake rise evenly.
  • Sprinkle with reserved cup of crumbs.
  • Bake for about 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.

SHOO FLY CUPCAKES | JUST A PINCH RECIPES
My Mother's Shoo Fly Pie was always one of my favorite's growing up. This recipe was handed down to me many years ago. My adult twin sons still request Shoo Fly Pie for their birthday. My 3 year old Grandson also loves it. He likes to help me bake as my little helper. We now make them in a cupcake instead of a pie for him. He likes to put the crumbs on the top and then watch them grow in the oven. Such a simple recipe and such a joy to make!

SHOO FLY CAKE WET BOTTOM - CALLHERAPPLEBROOG
This cake was kinda dry and not molasses tasting like a shoo fly pie has. Only a little circle in the middle of the cake did the crumbs stay on top of the cake. Mix with hands to form crumbs. Preheat oven to 375 degrees f (190 degrees c). It’s also a little sweeter and darker than the new york times shoofly.

Wet-bottom shoo-fly pies are usually made with a sweet corn syrup rather than granulated sugar, which prevents the cake from becoming too hard when cooked. The top is usually sprinkled with powdered sugar. Dry-bottom shoo-fly pies are usually made with blackberry or raspberry jam as the filling instead of a liquid one.
