Apple Pie Fries make a delicious, crispy dessert that's baked to perfection and drizzled with caramel sauce.

2 Pie Crust
1 1/2 cup Apple Pie Filling
1 Egg
to taste Sparkling Sugar
1 cup Caramel Sauce

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C).
  • Chop the Apple Pie Filling (1 1/2 cup) using a knife or a food processor if you have one.
  • Unroll the Pie Crust (2) and spread the apple pie filling onto one of them, leaving a 1/8-inch border around the edge. Then cover with the other crust and press the sides together to secure.
  • Make an egg wash by mixing the Egg (1) with a splash of water.
  • Brush some egg wash on top of the crust and sprinkle the Sparkling Sugar (to taste) to mimic the look of salty fries. Cut strips about 1/2-inch thick and cut those into fry shapes.
  • Place them carefully on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 12 minutes, or until they're golden and firm.
  • Serve with Caramel Sauce (1 cup) as a sweet 'ketchup' for dipping!

2 cups all-purpose flour
½ cup shortening, chilled
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup cold water
2 apples
¼ cup white sugar, or to taste
? teaspoon ground cinnamon, or to taste
oil for frying

Steps:

  • Sift flour and salt together. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add cold water 1 tablespoon at a time and mix with fork. When the flour mixture is moistened, gather it into a ball, wrap it in plastic, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Peel and dice the apples and place them in a saucepan. Combine the sugar and cinnamon; pour over the apples and toss to coat. Cook, covered, in a saucepan on low heat. Cook until soft, then mash with fork to form a thick applesauce. Allow to cool.
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface. Roll the dough out to 1/8 inch thick and cut rounds with a large cookie cutter (4 inches in diameter).
  • In each round, place 1 heaping tablespoon fruit. Moisten edges with cold water, fold in half, and press edge with a fork to seal. Repeat with the remaining pastry and filling.
  • Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Fry the pies, a few at a time, 2 to 3 minutes on each side; cook until the crust is golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

  • Preheat oven to 350°. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine blueberries with lemon juice, brown sugar, cornstarch, vanilla, and cinnamon. Bring mixture to a boil, stirring frequently. Cook, stirring, until blueberries burst and juices thicken, about 6 minutes. Set aside to cool. Unroll one pie crust onto prepared baking sheet. Spread blueberry mixture onto pie crust, and top with second pie crust. Brush with egg and sprinkle with sugar. Using a pizza cutter, cut into fry shapes. Spread out evenly on tray.  Bake until crust is golden, 35 to 40 minutes.  Let cool, then serve with caramel for dipping.

  • ***Important: Be careful when frying with hot oil! If you have little ones in the house, put the pot of oil on the back burner.***To make the pastry, mix together the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the 1/2 cup of shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add 1 of the beaten eggs, stirring gently with a fork, then add the buttermilk, stirring gently until it all comes together. Form into a ball and refrigerate for at least 1 hour in a plastic bag. To make the pies, roll the pastry on a floured surface into a large rectangle, about 12 inches by 24-plus inches. Make sure the dough is rolled very thin! Using a pizza cutter or a knife, trim the edges to make a very uniform rectangle. Remove the scraps along the edge.Cut the rectangle in half across the middle, then make three cuts in the other direction so that you wind up with 8 smaller rectangles. Place a heaping tablespoon of pie filling on the bottom half of each of the rectangles, leaving plenty of room around the edges. Brush the other beaten egg around the edges of the half of the rectangle with the filling. Bring the top part of the rectangle over the bottom half, pressing lightly to remove air pockets. Press the sides to seal. Dip a fork in flour and crimp the edges gently so that they're extra sealed.
