Mozzarella Dippers Recipe with Spicy Dipping Sauce ... image

Try our gooey mozzarella sticks with a punchy dipping sauce. Blocks of mozzarella stand up better to deep-frying and will still give you that cheesy, stringy ooze. These are best cooked from frozen, so they are a perfect nibble to squirrel away for when you have friends round

Total Time 50 minutes

Number Of Ingredients 15

mozzarella 400g block
plain flour 3 tbsp, heavily seasoned
eggs 2, beaten
panko breadcrumbs 100g
garlic salt 1 tsp
dried oregano 1 tsp
oil, for deep-frying
olive oil 1 1/2 tbsp
butter 1 tbsp
onion 1/2, chopped
garlic 1 clove, crushed
dried chilli flakes, a good pinch
smoked paprika 1/4 tsp
tinned chopped tomatoes 100g
sugar (any kind) 1/2 tsp

Steps:

  • Cut the mozzarella into thick slices then into 2cm-wide fingers and leave to sit on kitchen paper for 10 minutes.
  • Put the flour, egg and panko into separate bowls. Tip the garlic salt and oregano into the breadcrumbs and toss. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Dip each mozzarella stick first in the flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs. Line them up on the tray as you coat them, then put in the freezer. Once frozen, transfer into freezer bags.
  • To make the sauce, heat the olive oil and butter in a pan, then cook the onion and garlic until really soft. Add the chilli flakes, paprika, tomatoes and sugar, and simmer for 15 minutes until thickened. Use a stick blender to whizz until smooth, then freeze. When needed, defrost in a pan and simmer for 5 minutes before serving.
  • Fill a pan no more than 1/3 full of oil and heat to 180C or until a cube of bread browns in 30 seconds. Fry the mozzarella sticks in batches, straight from frozen, for 4-5 minutes until golden brown, and drain on kitchen paper. Serve with the warm dipping sauce.

BAKED MOZZARELLA STICKS WITH SPICY TOMATO DIPPING SAUCE ...

Baked mozzarella sticks with spicy tomato dipping sauce ... image

Spice up snack time with baked mozzarella sticks and a spicy tomato sauce. No need for frying or lots of hot oil in order to make this recipe. If you're in a particular hurry, you can use 2 cups of your favorite marinara sauce instead of going the homemade way, but we highly recommend making your own sauce to really put these mozzarella sticks over the top. Keep in mind while you're making the sticks that you'll need to freeze them for about an hour before you bake them in the oven. They only take about 10 minutes to bake, so they're a great make-ahead appetizer before a party or game time.

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 spray(s) Olive oil cooking spray
1 tsp Olive oil
1 medium clove(s) Garlic clove(s) minced
15 oz Canned tomato sauce
0.25 tsp Table salt
0.125 tsp Sugar granulated
0.125 tsp Crushed red pepper flakes optional
6 Tbsp Fresh breadcrumbs unseasoned panko
0.5 tsp Garlic powder
0.5 tsp Dried oregano
0.25 tsp Kosher salt
0.25 tsp Black pepper ground
2 Tbsp All-purpose flour enriched
2 item(s) Egg white(s) lightly scrambled
4 stick(s) WW Light part-skim mozzarella string cheese

Steps:

  • Spray a baking sheet with olive oil cooking spray.
  • In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil over medium low heat until just warm, about 1 minute. Add garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Add tomato sauce, salt, sugar and red pepper flakes (if desired). Stir well and heat until sauce begins to bubble. Reduce heat to low and simmer 10 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • While sauce is cooking prepare mozzarella sticks. Combine panko, garlic powder, oregano, salt and pepper on a medium sized plate.
  • Place flour on a small plate. Dip each stick in flour to coat. Shake off excess and dip in egg. Dip sticks in panko mixture. Place sticks on baking sheet 2 inches apart. Spray tops with olive oil cooking spray.
  • Place baking sheet in freezer for 1 hour and refrigerate sauce.
  • Fifteen to twenty minutes before serving time preheat oven to 400F. Once oven has reached desired temperature, remove baking sheet from freezer and place in oven. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until sticks are just heated through but not melted. Remove from oven and serve with sauce, warmed as follows.
  • While mozzarella sticks are baking, remove sauce from refrigerator and heat, in a microwave-safe dish, in microwave oven for 1 to 2 minutes until warmed through. Serve ½ cup sauce with 1 mozzarella stick.

EASY MARINARA DIPPING SAUCE FOR THE LAZY RECIPE - FOOD.COM
For those of us who don't like sauces laden with tomato chunks (much as I like tomato-based foods, tomato chunks just gross me out!) and also happen to be way too lazy to peel and cut tomatoes (that's what cans are for.) For some variation ideas try replacing one of the cans of tomato sauce with tomato paste if you like it thicker. Like it really spicy? Replace one plain can with one can of pre-seasoned tomato sauce. Yummy dipping sauce for mozzarella sticks, serve 1/4 cup in a ramekin. Recommended dishes to have with this sauce: Recipe #394477, Recipe #30977, and Recipe #91274 if making pretzel cheese logs!

  • To gently heat, pour 1/4 cup (or the desired amount) into a microwave-safe ramekin or container, and put a paper plate over it so tomato splats won't get all over the microwave. Nuke for 30 seconds on 50% power. You may have to adjust up or downward depending on microwave strength.
