Butter Rich Spritz Butter Cookies Recipe | Allrecipes image

These are wonderful cookies from the press. They are rich in flavor. My mom has made these cookies for years for all of the holidays. She even used food coloring for the different designs, like green trees, etc.The kids love to decorate them as much as they love to eat them.

Yield 3 dozen

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, softened
1 ¼ cups confectioners' sugar
2 egg yolks
½ teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Sift together the flour and salt; set aside.
  • In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Stir in the egg yolks, almond extract and vanilla extract. Gradually blend in the sifted ingredients. Fill a cookie press with dough and shoot cookies about 1 1/2 inches apart onto an ungreased cookie sheet. If you like, decorate with sugar or sprinkles at this time.
  • Bake for 6 to 8 minutes in the preheated oven.

Number Of Ingredients 13

1/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/3 cup molasses
1 large egg, room temperature
2 tablespoons water
2-2/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
Frosting of choice

Steps:

  • Cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in molasses, egg and water. In another bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients minus frosting; gradually beat into creamed mixture. Divide dough in half. Shape each into a disk; cover. Refrigerate until easy to handle, about 30 minutes., Preheat oven to 350°. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion of dough to 1/8-in. thickness. Cut with a floured 4-in. gingerbread man cookie cutter. Place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets., Bake until edges are firm, 8-10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. Frost as desired.

Press on chocolate chips for eyes and M&M's for buttons. Carefully remove from pans to wire racks to cool completely., For frosting, in a small bowl, beat confectioners' sugar, extract and enough milk to reach a piping consistency. If two colors of frosting are desired, transfer half of the frosting to another bowl and tint each with a different food coloring., Cut a small hole in a corner of a food-safe plastic bag; fill with frosting. I made this recipe with three other Spritz recipes from this site. The texture was perfect for press cookies, but I found the almond flavoring overwhelming both in the dough and in teh finished product. I took them to work and to a church social and asked folks to rate them. These were the least favorite of the four Spritz recipes.
