These are great homemade onion rings that are batter-fried rather than having a bread crumb coating. They are addictive, so be careful!

2 large onions, cut into rings
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
1 egg
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon salt
vegetable oil for frying

Steps:

  • Soak onion rings in a bowl of ice water for 1 hour; drain and pat dry with paper towels.
  • Whisk 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons flour, milk, egg, 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, and salt together in a bowl until smooth.
  • Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Dip onion rings in the batter, working in batches, until evenly coated and arrange in 1 layer on a plate.
  • Fry the battered onion rings, working in batches, until browned, about 5 minutes. Transfer fried onion rings to a paper towel-lined plate using a slotted spoon.

Onion – 1, large, cut into ¼-inch slices
Flour – 1 ¼ cups
Baking powder – 1 tsp.
Salt – 1 tsp.
Egg – 1
Milk – 1 cup
Dry breadcrumbs – ¾ cup
Seasoning salt – to taste
Oil – for frying, about 1 quart
Deep-fryer – for frying

Steps:

  • Add oil to a deep-fryer and heat it to about 365 ° F. Split onion pieces into rings and set them aside. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt on a separate bowl. Dip onion rings into the flour mixture and set aside. Add egg and milk to the flour mixture and whisk with a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat well and place them on a wire rack to drain. Leave until the batter stops dripping. To clean up easier, place the wire rack over aluminum foil. Place the dry breadcrumbs on a plate or a shallow dish and spread them evenly. Place the rings in the crumbs, one at a time, and scoop the crumbs over the rings to coat them well. Make sure the coating clings well, too. Deep fry the rings for 2 to 3 minutes (several at a time) or until they&rsquo;re golden brown. <p>Place the onion rings on paper towels to drain, season with salt, and serve.</p>
