Hamburger Hoagie Recipe: How to Make It - Taste of Home image

Number Of Ingredients 10

1-1/2 pounds ground beef
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
3 slices process cheese (Velveeta)
1/4 cup chopped onion
2 beef bouillon cubes
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 loaf (1 pound) French bread or Italian bread
Additional process cheese (Velveeta) slices, optional
1 medium green pepper, thinly sliced
1 medium tomato, thinly sliced

Steps:

  • In a skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in tomato sauce, cheese, onion, bouillon and garlic powder. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until bouillon is dissolved and cheese is melted. Cut the bread in half widthwise and lengthwise. Carefully hollow out top and bottom of loaf, leaving a 1/2-in. shell (discard removed bread or save for another use). Spoon meat mixture into bottom halves of bread. Top with additional cheese if desired, green pepper and tomato. Replace bread tops. Wrap in heavy-duty foil. Bake at 400° for 15-20 minutes or until heated through. Slice and serve warm.

This open-faced sandwich is a great weeknight meal! We really liked the Worcestershire and A1 sauce in the burger... added great flavor. This looks pretty fancy when plated, so no one needs to know how super simple it was to make!

Number Of Ingredients 13

2 1/4 pound(s) lean beef (hamburger meat)
1 tablespoon(s) Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon(s) A1 sauce
1 can(s) beef consomme (10.5 oz)
1/2 cup(s) diced onion
1/2 - onion, cut into thin rings
1 teaspoon(s) salt
1 teaspoon(s) pepper
1 can(s) beef gravy (14.5 oz), reserve one tablespoon
8 slice(s) Sara Lee classic french bread
3 tablespoon(s) olive oil
1 1/2 tablespoon(s) self-rising flour
1 small can diced mushrooms

Steps:

  • In a large bowl add the beef, A1 sauce, worcestershire, the reserved beef gravy, diced onion, salt and pepper.
  • Using hands knead meat until combined.
  • Make meat into five patties.
  • In a lightly sprayed skillet cook patties 15 minutes per side or until your desired doneness!
  • In a smaller skillet add a teaspoon of oil and saute onion rings until lightly brown, drain on paper towel.
  • Once patties are done remove from skillet and add the 3 tablespoons of olive oil, let get hot then add the flour. Scrape bottom of skillet to get meat drippings.
  • When flour is brown add the consomme and beef gravy, stir to mix.
  • Add the mushrooms, put patties back in skillet. Use a spoon and coat meat with the gravy and mushrooms. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Toast the french bread. Add two slices of bread per plate. Put meat on top of bread, spoon gravy and mushrooms on top. Garnish with onion rings.
