At one time Nabisco actually conducted a study to determined that 50 percent of Oreo consumers twist the cookie apart before eating it. I guess this is important information since it concerns the world's top-selling cookie. Historians at Nabisco aren't sure who came up with the idea for this sandwich cookie back in 1912, but they do know that it was introduced along with two other cookie creations that have long since died. The name may have come from the Greek word for mountain, oreo, which would once have made sense because the first test version was hill-shaped. When the Oreo was first sold to the public, it was much larger than today's cookie, but it kept shrinking over the years until Nabisco realized it had become too small and had to enlarge it again to today's current 1 3/4-inch diameter.  In 1975, Nabisco figured we couldn't have too much of a good thing, so the company gave us Double Stuf Oreos, with twice the filling. Apple-Gingersnap Crumble Cookie Pizza Recipe - Pillsbur… image

We took some of fall’s best flavors—apples, maple syrup and gingersnaps—and put them in one extraordinary dessert pizza. Step one: make sugar cookie dough crust. Step two: spread with maple cream cheese mixture and top with apples and crushed gingersnaps. Step three: devour.

1 roll (16.5 oz) refrigerated Pillsbury™ Sugar Cookie Dough
1 medium sweet-tart apple (Honeycrisp), cut into 1/4-inch slices
1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 package (8 oz each) cream cheese, softened
1/2 teaspoon maple extract
1 1/2 cups Cool Whip original whipped topping, thawed (from 8-oz container)
1/2 cup coarsely crushed gingersnap cookies (about 6 cookies from 16-oz box)

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F. Line 12-inch pizza pan with cooking parchment paper, leaving some to hang over edge of pan.
  • Cut cookie dough into 1/4-inch slices; place in pan. Press evenly over bottom to form crust. Bake 17 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely, about 30 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in small microwavable bowl, mix apples, 1 tablespoon sugar and the cinnamon. Microwave uncovered on High 1 to 2 minutes, stirring after 1 minute, until apples are softened. Cool completely, and drain any liquid from apples. Loosely cover, and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  • In medium bowl, beat cream cheese, remaining 1/3 cup sugar and the maple extract with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Add whipped topping; beat just until well mixed. Spread mixture on top of cooled cookie crust; refrigerate 1 hour.
  • Just before serving, arrange apples in single layer on top of cream cheese layer; top with crushed cookies. Cover and refrigerate any remaining pizza.

  • Preheat oven to 375°. In a large bowl, mix the first six ingredients. Add apples; toss to coat. In a small saucepan, combine caramels and rum. Cook and stir over medium-low heat until caramels are melted. Pour over apple mixture; toss to coat. Transfer to a greased 8-in. square baking dish., For topping, in a small bowl, mix crushed cookies, brown sugar and flour; cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over filling. Bake 35-40 minutes or until apples are tender. Cover loosely with foil if top browns too quickly. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
