MAKE YOUR OWN SEAWEED SNACKS - JAMIE GELLER

Make Your Own Seaweed Snacks - Jamie Geller image

Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. Cut nori into small squares or large strips using sharp scissors. Place nori onto a baking sheet sheet. Most flavoring are best

Provided by Tamar Genger MA, RD

Total Time 20 minutes

Prep Time 5 minutes

Cook Time 15 minutes

Yield 2 Servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

4 sheets of toasted nori
oil (any variety)
pickled ginger juice
sea salt
wasabi powder
sriracha
garlic powder

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. Cut nori into small squares or large strips using sharp scissors. Place nori onto a baking sheet sheet. Most flavoring are best with oil, but I found the pickled ginger variety really interesting and made it without oil.  These got more curly then ther others because of the liquid, but it didn't bother us.  For the other flavors you can mix the oil with spices of choice and use a pastry brush to brush a light coating on both sides of the nori pieces.  If desired you can sprinkle more or other spices on top.  Then bake for 15 to 20 minutes.  Let cool and store in an airtight container (though I have not been able to make enough to store yet, they all get eaten too fast). Enjoy.

Prized for its oceany umami flavor in sushi and miso soup—and now a popular packaged snack item—nori is dried Japanese seaweed that offers new possibilities for cooks. Its papery texture makes it easy to crisp in the oven and crumble over veggie sides, noodle bowls, and stir-fries for a little briny kick. These are easy, portable snacks that kids and adults will love. If you need a salty fix, replace potato chips with these briny, crispy nori sheets toasted in the oven. They can last up to four days in an airtight container so they are a great road trip snack.

SEAWEED AND GREENS SALAD | FOOD & WINE
In this hearty side salad that blends sea greens and land greens, fresh salad greens, carrots, radishes, and cucumber get a boost of salinity and texture from three different types of nutritious and delicious seaweeds: kelp, dulse, and Irish moss. The trio of mineral-forward sea vegetables is nicely balanced by rice vinegar dressing. Dulse, a red seaweed that commonly grows in the Northeastern Atlantic and around the UK, and Irish moss, which has a frilly, bushy shape, can be purchased at seaveg.com. Sustainably farmed kelp from Maine can be purchased at atlanticseafarms.com.
