- In a Dutch oven or soup kettle, cook sausage and onion over medium heat until sausage is lightly browned and onion is tender; drain. Add the cabbage and water. Cover and cook on low for 10 minutes. Stir in the carrots and potatoes. Cover and cook for 25-30 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.

Place cabbage in a 5- or 6-qt. slow cooker., In a large skillet, cook beef and sausage with onion and garlic over medium-high heat until no longer pink, 7-9 minutes; crumble meat; drain. Spoon over cabbage; top with tomato mixture., Cook, covered, on low until cabbage is tender and flavors are blended, 5-6 hours. If desired, serve with cooked rice and sprinkle with parsley.
