When the jar's empty and you need prepared mustard for a recipe, here's an emergency blend. Savor this in recipes such as honey mustard chicken wings or mustard pretzel dip. I found this recipe in Taste Of Home magazine. I have not tried this recipe, but I'm posting it in safe keeping.

1 tablespoon ground mustard
1 teaspoon cider vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar (up to)

Steps:

  • Mix ground mustard, cider vinegar, and sugar to equal 1 tablespoon of prepared mustard. Let stand for 15 minutes so that the flavors can develop.
  • If adding mustard to wet or liquid mixture, 1 teaspoon ground mustard is equal to 1 tablespoon prepared mustard.

¼ cup water
¼ cup mustard powder
3 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
½ teaspoon quick-mixing flour (such as Wondra®)
¼ teaspoon salt
? teaspoon salt
? teaspoon ground turmeric
1 pinch garlic powder
1 pinch paprika

Steps:

  • Combine water, mustard powder, vinegar, flour, 1/4 teaspoon plus 1/8 teaspoon salt, turmeric, garlic powder, and paprika in a small saucepan over medium heat; whisk until smooth. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer, stirring often, until mustard is thickened, 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Remove saucepan from heat; leave uncovered for 1 minute. Cover saucepan with a lid until cooled to room temperature; refrigerate until chilled.
