Cream Cheese Penguins Recipe | Allrecipes image

Just imagine a cute display of penguins, made with black olives, carrots and cream cheese! You can add scarves and hats by using fresh red pepper strips, or canned pimentos cut into different shapes. Use frilly toothpicks if you can.

Number Of Ingredients 4

18 jumbo black olives, pitted
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
18 small black olives
1 carrot

Steps:

  • Cut a slit from top to bottom, lengthwise, into the side of each jumbo olive. Carefully insert about 1 teaspoon of cream cheese into each olive. Slice the carrot into eighteen 1/4 inch thick rounds; cut a small notch out of each carrot slice to form feet. Save the cut out piece and press into center of small olive to form the beak. If necessary cut a small slit into each olive before inserting the beak.
  • Set a big olive, large hole side down, onto a carrot slice. Then, set a small olive onto the large olive, adjusting so that the beak, cream cheese chest and notch in the carrot slice line up. Secure with a toothpick.

These cute penguin treats are a fun and easy appetizer that kids (and adults) will love to eat!

2 cans (5.75 oz each) small, jumbo pitted black olives
2 cans (5.75 oz each) large, jumbo pitted black olives
1 package (8 oz) cream cheese
2 large carrots
Toothpick box

Steps:

  • Start by slicing a carrot to create a small, round circle. Cut out a small “slice” from the carrot round and set aside.
  • Using a large pitted black olive and a knife, slice from top to bottom to open the olive up. Use a small spoon or teaspoon scoop to fill the inside of the black olive with slightly softened cream cheese. Try using a cheese knife to smooth out the cream cheese and a napkin to clean off the black olive.
  • Place the cream cheese-filled black olive on top of the carrot round and use a toothpick down the center to secure.
  • Place the small carrot slice (from step 1) into the hole of a small pitted black olive. Slide the small black olive onto the toothpick to finish your penguin!

  • In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Beat in egg and vanilla. Stir in sour cream. Combine flour, baking soda and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Divide dough into three balls; cover and refrigerate 3 hours or until easy to handle., Preheat oven to 375°. Remove one portion of dough from the refrigerator at a time. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/8-in. thickness. Cut with a floured 4-in. penguin cookie cutter. Place 1 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. , Bake 6-8 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool., For frosting, in a small bowl, combine confectioners' sugar, water and meringue powder; beat on low speed just until combined. Beat on high 4 minutes or until soft peaks form. Cover frosting with damp paper towels or plastic wrap between uses., Set aside half of frosting. Tint half of the remaining frosting black. Divide remaining frosting into thirds; tint one orange, one red and the remaining third green., Working quickly with the black frosting, pipe outlines of the penguins' bodies; fill in with thinned black frosting. Let dry at room temperature for several hours or until firm. Fill in centers of penguins with thinned white frosting; let dry until firm. , Add eyes with the black and white frostings or edible ink pen, orange beaks and feet and red and green scarves. Let stand until set. Add white and contrasting colored polka dots on the scarves. Let stand until set. Store in an airtight container.
