Believe it or not, you can make your own delicious, low-fat microwave popcorn using standard popping corn and a brown paper lunch bag. It works perfectly.

Number Of Ingredients 3

½ cup unpopped popcorn
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
½ teaspoon salt, or to taste

Steps:

  • In a cup or small bowl, mix together the unpopped popcorn and oil. Pour the coated corn into a brown paper lunch sack, and sprinkle in the salt. Fold the top of the bag over twice to seal in the ingredients.
  • Cook in the microwave at full power for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes, or until you hear pauses of about 2 seconds between pops. Carefully open the bag to avoid steam, and pour into a serving bowl.

1/4 cup popcorn kernels
Melted butter, coconut oil, or other oil for topping
Salt, for topping

Steps:

  • Measure the popcorn kernels into the bag.
  • Fold over the top: Give the top of the bag two or three folds and firmly crease the seam so that it stays closed.
  • Microwave for 2 to 4 minutes on high: Listen closely — when the time between pops slows to about 2 seconds, your popcorn is ready. Depending on your microwave, popping can finish in as little as 2 minutes or take as long as 4 minutes. Do not wait for all the kernels to pop; your popcorn will burn. It's normal for there to be unpopped kernels in the bag.
  • Pour the popcorn into a bowl: Top with melted butter or oil and sprinkle with salt. Eat right away.

Remove the pan from the heat, take out the 2 popped kernels, add in the remaining kernels, cover, and let sit for 1 minute.Put the pot back over the stove on high heat. Within a few minutes, the popcorn should start popping. Give the pan a good shake every now and then to ensure even heating. Once the popping slows down to nearly a stop, remove the pan from the heat and let it sit for 1 more minute to give any stubborn kernels a chance to pop. Pour into a large serving bowl.Top with butter and salt if desired. Store any leftovers (ha!) in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
