2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup honey
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
Additional orange zest, optional

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, combine the cranberries, syrup, honey and orange zest. Cook over medium heat until the berries pop, about 15 minutes. Cover and store in the refrigerator. If desired, top with additional orange zest before serving.

1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (,or to taste)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper (,or to taste)

Steps:

  • Whisk together olive oil, maple syrup, cider vinegar, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Season dressing with salt and pepper; whisk until the dressing is well blended.

Substituting a combination of maple syrup and honey for the usual corn syrup in pecan pie makes for a complex and richly flavored confection that’s still wonderfully gooey in the center. This recipe also has double the amount of pecans compared with most recipes, giving it plenty of crunch. You can bake it the day before serving; it keeps very well at room temperature for at least 24 hours. It also freezes reasonably well for up to 3 months, though the crust won’t be quite as flaky.
