Use this homemade cough syrup as a natural remedy for sore throats and coughs this winter.

Ingredients

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 T fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup water

Steps:

Add the cayenne pepper, ground ginger, honey, apple cider vinegar, fresh lemon juice, and water to a jar with a lid.
Tighten the lid and shake the jar to mix the ingredients well.
Store, with lid tightened, in the refrigerator in between uses.
Shake again to mix well and eliminate any settling that has occured prior to using.
Take 1 teaspoon at a time to soothe sore throats and coughs.
Repeat every couple of hours, or as needed.

How to make a whiskey cough syrup with honey and lemon. Use it by itself or use to make a hot toddy.

Ingredients

1/2 cup brown whiskey
1/4 cup raw honey (local if possible)
1 lemon, sliced
1/2 cup brown whiskey
1/4 cup raw honey, local is best
1 lemon sliced
10-12 peppermint balls
1 1/2 ounce brown whiskey
1 tablespoon raw honey, local is best
1/2 ounce lemon juice
1 cup hot water or tea
Lemon wedge, cinnamon stick, or star anise (optional)

Steps:

Place lemon slices in the jar.
Pour whiskey over the lemon slices.
Spoon the raw honey on top.
Seal the jar and shake for a minute.
Let rest overnight, shake every few hours.
Place 3-4 peppermint balls in the jar.
Add lemon slices on top of the peppermint balls.
Add about half of the honey.
Repeat with another layer.
Add whiskey to fill the jar.
Put the lid on the jar and shake gently.
Let the homemade cough syrup with whiskey and peppermint sit overnight, shaking every few hours.
Combine whiskey, honey, and lemon juice in a mug.
Pour in hot water. Stir well.
Add a lemon wedge, cinnamon stick, or star anise if desired.
Drink while hot.
