This is one of the most simple meals that I make I put it all the ingredients in the crockpot and later I have a very simple yet filling meal for my family.I use pink beans but you could use whatever you want. I serve mine with rice and a bit of cheese on top. Enjoy! *Update* I realized after two people reviewed my recipe and after I went to my local butcher that the ham hocks I get are rather large (I'm going to guess about as big as a medium eggplant if not larger). Which is why my recipe only lists one. You may want to change that to 2 or more depending on the actual size of your ham hocks.

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 (16 ounce) package pink beans (washed and picked clean of rocks and soaked over night)
1 small onion, diced
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 large ham hock, split in half
6 -8 cups water or 6 -8 cups chicken stock
salt and pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • In crockpot add cleaned beans, onions, garlic and ham hock.
  • Cover with water or chicken stock and cook on medium for 6 hours.
  • At about the half way point the meat should come off the ham hock, if not let it cook a little longer until you can. Remove the ham hock from beans and let cool.
  • Remove the layer of fat from the ham hock and shred the meat into bite size pieces and return to the crockpot.
  • When beans are done add salt and pepper to taste and skim as much fat off the beans as possible.

1 spiral-sliced ham bone or leftover ham bone
1 lb. bag of dried beans
1 onion (diced)
6 cups water

Steps:

  • Cut the meat off the ham bone. Eat a little while you cut it off (optional). Freeze that ham meat, you won’t need it for this dish. There should still be plenty of meat on the bone.
  • Dice up the onion and throw it in your pot with the rinsed dried beans and the ham bone.
  • Fill up your Instant Pot with water to the 5-liter line in the 8 qt., or the 3 to 3.5-Liter line in a 6qt., or Pressure Cook MAX line.
  • Set pressure cooker on <Pressure Cook> or <Manual> for 30 minutes.
  • Natural Pressure Release (NPR) for at least 10 minutes. This is an important step in making sure your beans are cooked. NPR time is cook time. If you do a Quick Release as soon as your timer goes off, your beans won’t be done!
  • Remove ham bone to a plate or cutting board. Pick the meat off the bone and remove the fat, gristle, etc. Return the meat to the pot.
  • Salt to taste after cooking. Usually our ham bone adds enough saltiness that I hesitate to add salt before we are at the table. Different ham bones are a huge variable in the salt factor. If you feel your beans need salt, add it!
