Whether you're out of loaf'ed bread or just want to make a special variation on this classic breakfast: hot dog buns are the bomb (at least according to one cool kid).

4 hot dog buns
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons cinnamon sugar (by McCormick)
1/4 cup milk
maple syrup (by Login Cabin)
butter

Steps:

  • Pre-heat an oven to 150 - 175 degrees.
  • Heat a pan & coat it in butter.
  • Mix Eggs, Milk, Vanilla Extract in a square bowl (for dipping).
  • Cut the buns on their seam, so you have 8 pieces of bread.
  • Dip each bun half in the mix & then drip excess mix back in to bowl
  • Place each bun half about an inch apart on your pan.
  • Sprinkle Cinnamon Sugar on each side
  • Then place the finished pieces on a cookie sheet in the oven (this will keep'em warm and make them nice and crispy).

This makes a crisp chewy style hamburger bun that is delicious! I made this for fun and it is a family favorite now. If you like big burgers these buns will handle them well. They are fantastic as sandwich buns also. They make a mean ham and cheese! This is adopted from Failproof french bread recipe # 81211

Total Time 33 minutes

Prep Time 15 minutes

Cook Time 18 minutes

Yield 6-9 Buns, 6-9 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

500 g bread flour (4 cups)
5 g salt (1t)
7 g yeast, 1 (1/4 ounce package)
325 g warm water (1 1/2 cups)
8 ounces hot water, for spraying oven walls

Steps:

  • Place ingredients in bread maker according to manufacturer instructions. The water should be about 110*F.
  • Set the machine to dough cycle and start the machine.
  • When the dough is finished roll onto a floured surface.
  • Roll the dough to about an 1 1/4" -2 inch thickness (depending on how tall you want your buns.).
  • Flour a 3 1/2 inch cutter (I use a glass) and press straight down to cut out the bun.
  • Place buns on a greased baking sheet and cover with a tea towell for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
  • Place buns in oven, then using a water bottle sprayer, squirt hot water all around the hot oven, but not near the light bulb. Wait 30 seconds and spray again, do this one more time and let the buns bake.
  • Bake for 15 to 18 mins (ovens vary in temp). Check halfway way through and turn the pan.
  • Cool on a wire rack and enjoy!
  • (Note) I have made these with a stand mixer with great success.

  • Preheat a sandwich press or grill pan over medium. Add hot dogs and cook, turning one time, until lightly charred and warmed through, about 4 minutes. If using a panini press, close the press and cook for 2 minutes total. Set aside on a plate.  Lay bread on a work surface, cut side up, and spread one half of each baguette with mustard and the other half with ketchup. Top each half with cheese. Arrange hot dogs evenly on top of the cheese on the bottom slice of the baguette. Dollop hot dogs with onions and relish and sprinkle with poppy seeds. Close sandwiches and gently press.   Press or grill the sandwiches, flipping one time, until the outside is golden and the cheese is melted, about 5 minutes. If using a cast iron skillet or grill pan, use a second pan to press the sandwiches. If using a panini press, close the press and cook for 2 minutes and 30 seconds total. Slice each sandwich in half and serve with more mustard and ketchup.
