Lofthouse Sugar cookies are those soft cake like sugar cookies you find at Walmart store frosted with a sweet bright buttercream. My daughter always wants me to buy them and they are good. Over time I've worked with a few different recipes that pretty much taste the same and this is the one I ended up with. It's a soft cake like sugar cookie with yummy frosting and you can shape these anyway you like and decorate them how you like. Enjoy! Picture is of prepackaged cookies.

COOKIE DOUGH
1/2 cup(s) sour cream
1 cup(s) sugar
1/2 cup(s) butter, softened
2 - eggs
1/2 teaspoon(s) pure vanilla extract
3 cup(s) all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoon(s) baking powder
1/2 teaspoon(s) baking soda
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
BUTTERCREAM FROSTING
4 cup(s) powdered sugar
2 teaspoon(s) pure vanilla extract
2 tablespoon(s) whole milk
1/2 cup(s) butter, softened
1/2 cup(s) vegetable shortening
- food coloring to color frosting (optional)
- candy sprinkles or colored sugar to decorate (optional)

Steps:

COOKIE DOUGH DIRECTIONS: In a large bowl combine sour cream, sugar, butter, eggs and vanilla; mix well. In a smaller bowl combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt, then add to wet mixture and mix until everything is just incorporated. With a cookie scoop, scoop out even size scoops of dough and then roll in a ball in your hand and place on a cookie sheet and slightly flatten with your hand so it's in a circular shape. Bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven until light golden brown, no more than 10 minutes. They may seem under done but they aren't. Transfer to a cooling rack and let cool completely before frosting.
BUTTERCREAM FROSTING DIRECTIONS: Directions: Cream together butter and shortening in mixer, with paddle attachment on medium for about 2 minutes. Add 1/2 cup powdered sugar and beat until smooth, Add another 1/2 cup and beat until smooth. Add Vanilla, mix. Add gradually the remaining sugar and milk, making sure you end with sugar. Continue to mix on medium until smooth.

In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, allspice, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Set aside. In a mixer, beat the margarine (or butter) and brown sugar until fluffy. Drizzle in the molasses, mixing well and scraping the sides of the bowl a couple of times to make sure it's evenly combined. Add the eggs and maple extract and mix. Add the flour mixture in three batches, beating until just combined after each addition. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or more if you have time! When you're ready to bake the cookies, remove the dough from the fridge and preheat the oven to 350 F. When the dough is soft enough to roll but still firm, divide it in half and roll out each half between 2 sheets of plastic wrap (dividing it in half just makes it more manageable.) Cut out shapes of your choosing and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment or a baking mat. Bake for 12-15 minutes, depending on the size of cutters used, until the cookies are baked through but still soft. Remove with a spatula and allow to cool completely. ***IMPORTANT NOTE: Bake for less time if you desire a softer cookie and if cookies are small. Keep an eye on them and don't let them get too crisp. To make the royal icing, beat the powdered sugar, milk, and egg whites until thick but still able to be piped. Transfer to a piping bag fitted with a fine tip (or a squirt bottle.) Decorate the cookies however you'd like, using icing as an accent and as glue to hold on the candies. Allow icing to set before transporting or serving.
