1 lb ground beef
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 (10 1/2 ounce) can condensed tomato soup, undiluted
1 cup chopped celery
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
8 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, brown beef; drain.
  • Add beans, soup, celery, green pepper, onion, ketchup, brown sugar and seasonings; bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
  • Serve on buns.

Back in the 1950's my Grandma used to take me shopping at Kresge's in South Bend, IN. After looking for all the items on her shopping list we would have a Sloppy Joe at the lunch counter. Almost like a trip to Disneyland to this Indiana farm girl... What a wonder those sandwiches were. They toasted the bun and served them with potato chips & a pickle. We had very little money but we always had enough for our special lunch. Those shopping trips were truly a slice of heaven. When Kresge's closed Mom got the recipe from a friend who had worked there. 3 pound(s) lean ground beef
1 1/2 cup(s) chopped onions
1/2 cup(s) water
1 tablespoon(s) salt (i use less)
1 teaspoon(s) black pepper
2 tablespoon(s) chili powder
2 tablespoon(s) paprika
1 cup(s) tomato paste
1/4 cup(s) (optional) brown sugar or amount to your taste (mom's addition)

Steps:

  • Brown beef and onions. Add remaining ingredients, except brown sugar, and bring just to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes longer, stirring occasionally. Taste when done and add brown sugar if desired. Toast and butter hamburger buns. Serve on warm buns with potato chips and a dill pickle.

  • Preheat broiler to high with oven rack 5 to 6 inches from heat. Brush cut sides of buns with butter. Arrange buns, cut side up, on a baking sheet. Broil in preheated oven until toasted, 1 to 2 minutes. Spread each bottom bun half with 1 1/2 tablespoons mayonnaise, top with 2 patties, and spoon 1 1/2 tablespoons Hatch chile salsa over top. Cover with top bun halves, and serve immediately.
