- 1. Bring 4 cups water to a boil. Add cardamom and boil 1 minute. Add tea bags and turn off heat. Cover and let steep 4 minutes (the tea will become almost black in color). Stir in milk and sugar until sugar has dissolved. Taste and adjust the milk and/or sugar if needed. 2. Discard tea bags, then, using a tea strainer or mesh sieve, strain the chai into 4 individual cups.
