Number Of Ingredients 3

150g self-raising flour, plus a little extra
70g suet
small handful of parsley, chopped (optional)

Steps:

  • Whilst your stew is bubbling, make the dumplings. Weigh the flour into a bowl and add ½ tsp salt. Stir through the suet and parsley, if using. Make a well in the centre and add 3 tbsp cold water, mix to a dough, adding more water until the dough is firm but pliable. Divide into eight equal pieces and roll in a little more flour into balls. Chill until needed.
  • When the stew has about 30 mins to go, arrange the dumplings on top and cover with a lid. With the oven at 160C/140C fan/gas 3, cook the stew and dumplings for 20 mins, then remove the lid and cook for another 10 mins until they’re brown and puffed up.

My mother was one of the best cooks I ever knew. Whenever she made stews we mostly found homemade dumplings in them. We never ate things from packages or microwaves and you sure could taste what food was. That's the only way I cook today - I don't use any electronic gadgets to cook with except an electric stove.

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon white sugar
½ teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon margarine
½ cup milk

Steps:

  • Stir together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. Stir in milk and mix until a batter forms that is thick enough to be scooped with a spoon. Allow batter to rest for 3 to 5 minutes..
  • Drop batter by spoonfuls into boiling stew or soup. Cover and simmer without lifting the lid for 15 minutes. Serve.

    1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4.
    2. Quarter the squash, deseed and toss with 1 tablespoon of oil and a pinch of sea salt and black pepper, then roast on a tray for 1 hour, or until soft and golden. Leave to cool.
    3. Peel the garlic and 2cm of the ginger, then whiz in a food processor with the broccoli, miso and vinegar until fine. Pulse in the squash, then season to taste.
    4. One by one, lightly wet the edges of the wonton wrappers with your finger, add 1 heaped teaspoon of filling to the middle of each, and pinch together to seal (don’t stress if they tear every now and again), placing them in a large oiled nonstick frying pan as you go.
    5. Put the pan over a high heat, then pour over 150ml of water and cover. Let it steam until the water has completely evaporated, then uncover and allow to fry, removing as soon as the bottoms are golden and crisp.
    6. Meanwhile, peel the remaining ginger, finely grate with the chilli, and place in a small dipping bowl. Trim and finely shred the spring onions, toast the sesame seeds, then serve with soy, mustard and lime wedges.

I adopted this recipe found on the site. It is very similar to the one my mother always made. I added more celery, potatoes and onions to better reflect my Mom's original recipe. I have always served this with her dumplings. They are added to the soup after it cooked and cooked for an additional 10-12 minutes with lid on pot until they are done. My whole family loves this dish and I make it more in the cold months. Usually starting with Halloween after my kids-and then grand-kids returned from trick or treating. I would make potato soup one year and the next, a big "caldron" of chili with corn bread. :) I will also include my Mom's recipe for her dumplings with this. When I saw this recipe with the "adopt" tag on it, I just had to make it my own. Hope you all enjoy this as much as our family has enjoyed it throughout the years. I will add pictures of my soup when I make it again!
