The butter, EVOO, bacon, brown sugar and soy cook into a thick, sweet, smoky, salty syrup that melts into the beans during slow cooking and makes them over the top delicious. 3/4 stick(s) butter (not margarine)
1 tablespoon(s) extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup(s) brown sugar
2 tablespoon(s) soy sauce
6 can(s) green beans, drained
6 slice(s) bacon, diced or chopped into small pieces

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, add oil, butter, and diced bacon.
  • Heat over medium heat until butter melts and bacon is cooked and just crisped. Stir well.
  • Add brown sugar and soy; stirring until smooth.
  • OVEN: Bake at 350 degrees, covered, for 30 minutes and then uncovered for 15-20 minutes.
  • SLOW COOKER: Cook on low 6-7 hours or high 4-5 hours.

  • Remember ham hocks take a little longer than green beans, so if you use a ham hock, boil it first till tender then add the rest and cook. I personally never use ham hock due to fat content--I usually just use the bacon strips. I only listed it here as it was in the old south recipe.
