My Great Grandmother Hester's recipe, as given to me by my Great Aunt Jan.

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 cup milk
¼ cup flour
1 cup vegetable shortening (such as Crisco®)
1 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Cook the milk and flour in the top of a double boiler over just-barely simmering water, stirring frequently and scraping down the sides with a rubber spatula until thickened, about 5 minutes. Place the mixture in the refrigerator until chilled.n
  • Combine the vegetable shortening, sugar, and vanilla extract with an electric mixer until well blended. Beat the chilled milk mixture into the shortening mixture until fluffy.n

This chocolate icing uses butter and brown sugar with plenty of confectioners' sugar for a quick frosting for your cake.

Yield 2 cups

Number Of Ingredients 6

4 tablespoons butter
½ cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1 ½ cups confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • In a saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar over medium heat. Stir until sugar is dissolved, then add milk. Bring to a boil and remove from heat.n
  • Sift together cocoa and confectioners sugar. Blend into butter mixture and add vanilla. If consistency is too stiff, add more milk.n
  • Spread Quickly over cooled cake, as frosting will set up very fast.n
