This is a recipe that my Grandmother would always make using leftover ham. Its great for small or large families.

Prep Time 20 minutes

Cook Time 30 minutes

Number Of Ingredients 10

3/4 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
2 tablespoons margarine
1 tablespoon flour
1 dash pepper
1 cup milk
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup mayonnaise
3 cups potatoes, cooked and diced
2 cups ham, cooked and diced

Steps:

  • HEAT oven to 350 degrees.
  • COOK onion and green pepper in margarine until tender.
  • STIR in flour and pepper.
  • ADD milk and bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  • REDUCE heat and add cheese and mayo; stir until cheese melts.
  • ADD potatoes and ham; put into casserole dish.
  • BAKE for 30 minutes.

My best baked ham is a to die for recipe and makes excellent leftovers; from ham salad to mac-cheese with ham. It is loved by everyone that I have served it to and never had a unkind word except that I am fattening my family LOL!

Number Of Ingredients 10

8-10 lbs - ham shoulder or ham butte ( all meat should be cooked for a half an hour to every pound of the meat)
I can(s) pinapple slices or chunks
2 tablespoon(s) mustard, spicy brown
1 jar(s) maraschino cherries
3 tablespoon(s) grade a amber, maple syrup- no imitations please!
1/2 cup(s) dark or light brown sugar
3 pinch(es) whole cloves
- large soup pot, for boiling ham
- medium mixing bowl
- large baking pan with cover

Steps:

  • First, you need a large pot big enough to cover the ham with water. Be sure to remove all the plastic around the ham and DO NOT forget the plastic insert on the bottom! Set ham in the pot, add cloves,and place on burner to boil. Once boiling, change setting to medium heat. Rotate ham while simmering for 2 hours. Throw away the cloves when done simmering. Also remove the thick skin covering the fat. DO NOT remove the fat as this keeps the meat tender! Remove any fat you wish at the end of the baking. Begin heating the oven at 350 degrees toward the last half hour of the simmering.
  • Gather the other ingredients to make the uncooked glaze. Open the can of pineapple adding only the juice to the mixing bowl. Reserve pineapple for the meal. Then open the jar of cherries and add half the juice to the mixing bowl reserving the cherries for the meal. Add brown sugar, mustard, and maple syrup to the mixing bowl and stir to well blended. Put mixture to the side.
  • Once the ham is done simmering, remove from the very hot water to a tall baking pan with large serving forks. Preferably a pan that allows the ham to be covered while it is baking. If you do not have one, do not worry! Covering the ham well with aluminum foil will work just as well.
  • Now take the reserved uncooked glaze mixture and poor completely over the ham. Try to get some inside the ham through the cracks in the meat, as it helps to season the meat inside. Adding some pineapples and cherries is fine if you wish but not necessary, some do like cooked fruit on a ham. Either way is fine.
  • Once the ham is covered or well foiled, place ham in the oven. Bast with a turkey baster every half hour for 2 hours. This is all the baking time you need as most packaged hams are cooked through if not partially cooked. Take ham from oven and leave covered on the stove for a half hour allowing the ham to cool slightly enough to be served. Voila! Bon Appetite!

PIE IRON HAM AND CHEESE RECIPE » HOMEMADE HEATHER
