3/4 cup sugar
2/3 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
Additional sugar, if desired
Red and green fruit-flavored gelatins, if desired

Steps:

Heat oven to 400°F. In large bowl, mix 3/4 cup sugar, the oil, baking powder, vanilla, salt and eggs with spoon. Stir in flour.
Drop dough by teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheet. Press bottom of glass onto dough to grease, then dip into additional sugar; press on balls until 1/4-inch thickness. Dip bottom of glass onto a wet paper towel, then dip into dry gelatin; press onto dough. Repeat until desired color appears.
Bake 8 to 10 minutes until light brown. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely.

Ingredients

2 1/4 cup(s) flour
1 teaspoon(s) salt
1 teaspoon(s) baking soda
1 cup(s) shortening (can use butter, but they will flatten more)
1 cup(s) brown sugar
1/2 cup(s) sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoon(s) vanilla
2 cup(s) m & m's (reserve 1/2 cup for decorating)

Steps:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease baking sheets or use parchment paper.
In medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt and baking soda.
In large bowl, beat shortening (or butter), and sugars with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla until creamy.
Stir in flour mixture until just blended. By hand, stir in 1 1/2 cups M & M's. Drop by rounded tsp. onto cookie sheet. Press several additional M & M's onto the tops of cookies.
Bake for 9-12 minutes until golden or until cookies are just set in center.

At one time Nabisco actually conducted a study to determined that 50 percent of Oreo consumers twist the cookie apart before eating it. I guess this is important information since it concerns the world's top-selling cookie.
