Old-Time Cake Doughnuts Recipe: How to Make It image

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1-1/2 cups sugar, divided
3 large eggs, room temperature
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
3 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
3/4 cup 2% milk
Oil for deep-fat frying

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, beat butter and 1 cup sugar until crumbly, about 2 minutes. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition., Combine the flour, baking powder, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, salt and nutmeg; add to butter mixture alternately with milk, beating well after each addition. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours. , Turn onto a heavily floured surface; pat dough to 1/4-in. thickness. Cut with a floured 2-1/2-in. doughnut cutter. In an electric skillet or deep fryer, heat oil to 375°., Fry doughnuts, a few at a time, until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels. , Combine remaining 1/2 cup sugar and 2 tsp. cinnamon; roll warm doughnuts in mixture.
    Freeze option: After frying, wrap doughnuts in foil and transfer to a resealable freezer container. May be frozen for up to 3 months. To use, remove foil. Thaw at room temperature. Warm if desired. Combine 1/2 cup sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon; roll warm doughnuts in mixture.

box white cake mix

1 c.

sour cream

1/2 c.

(1 stick) butter, melted

1/4 c.

whole milk

1 tsp.

pure vanilla extract

2

large eggs

1/2 c.

strawberries, chopped

4 oz.

cream cheese, softened

3 c.

powdered sugar

Rainbow sprinkles

Steps:

  • Make cake: Preheat oven to 325°F and generously coat Bundt pan with cooking spray. In a large bowl, add cake mix, sour cream, milk, butter, vanilla, and eggs, and whisk to combine. Pour batter into the Bundt pan and smooth top with a spatula. Bake cake until golden, 43 to 45 minutes. Let cool for 15 minutes in pan, then use a butter knife to run along the inside of the pan to release the cake from the pan. Then have a grown-up help you carefully invert the cake onto a cooling rack.  Make frosting: Add strawberries to a blender and puree until smooth. In a large bowl, whisk together pureed strawberries, cream cheese, and powdered sugar until smooth. Pour frosting over cake and top with sprinkles.
