In 1951 when color movies were the rage, Betty Crocker's Color Vision Cake brought Technicolor to home kitchens across America.

1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ white cake mix
Water, vegetable oil and egg whites as called for on cake mix box
1 box (4-serving size) fruit-flavored gelatin (any flavor)
1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted
3 tablespoons milk
3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
Multicolored round candies, if desired

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Grease and lightly flour bottoms and sides of two 8- or 9-inch round cake pans, or spray with baking spray with flour.
  • Make cake batter as directed on box, adding 3 tablespoons of the dry gelatin with the egg whites (reserve remaining gelatin for the frosting). Pour into pans. Bake and cool as directed on box.
  • In medium bowl, beat remaining gelatin, butter and milk with electric mixer on low speed 1 minute, scraping bowl constantly. Gradually beat in powdered sugar until smooth. If necessary, stir in additional milk, 1/2 teaspoon at a time, until spreadable.
  • On serving plate, place 1 cake, rounded side down. Spread with 1/3 cup frosting. Top with second cake, rounded side up. Frost side and top of cake with remaining frosting. Sprinkle with candies. Store loosely covered.

This stunning watercolor effect is a surprisingly simple cake decorating technique that makes for an incredibly special dessert.

Yield Serves 8 to 10 (serving size: 1 slice)

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 (8-in.) round cake layers made from your favorite cake recipe or boxed cake mix
1?½ cups (12 oz.) unsalted butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
? teaspoon table salt
8 cups powdered sugar
6 tablespoons whole milk
Food coloring gel, in a variety of colors

Steps:

  • Prepare cake layers according to recipe or package directions.
  • Prepare the Frosting: Beat together butter, vanilla extract, and salt with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy, about 1 minute. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until fluffy, about 3 to 4 minutes. Add milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until frosting reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency.
  • Spread frosting between layers and on top and sides of cake, to create a crumb layer.
  • Divide remaining frosting among 5 small bowls. Using 1 color per bowl, add 1 to 2 drops color into each bowl. (We used yellow, pink, purple, orange, and blue.)
  • Place a few dollops of each color frosting randomly on sides and top of cake. Use an offset spatula to smooth frosting around cake. (*Be sure not to use too many strokes, or the colors will look muddy.)
  • If desired, combine 2 complementary frosting colors in a piping bag, and pipe a design around edges of cake.
