Ham 'n' Cheese Spiders Recipe: How to Make It image

These creepy sandwiches are sure to scare up some fun at Halloween time! Kids really enjoy eating the spider-shaped sandwiches. —Kendra Barclay, De Kalb, Illinois

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 cup chopped fully cooked ham
2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
2 tablespoons butter, softened
1-1/2 teaspoons prepared mustard
2 tubes (6 ounces each) small refrigerated flaky biscuits (5 count), divided
1 tube (11 ounces) refrigerated breadsticks
5 slices American cheese
1 large egg yolk
1 teaspoon water
10 ripe olive slices (about 2 tablespoons)
1 tablespoon diced pimientos
1 teaspoon poppy seeds

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°. Using small pieces of foil, make forty 1/2-in. foil balls for shaping spider legs; coat lightly with cooking spray., For filling, mix first four ingredients. On greased baking sheets, pat five biscuits into 3-1/2-in. circles. For legs, cut each of 10 breadsticks crosswise in half; cut each piece lengthwise in half. (Reserve remaining breadsticks for another use.) Attach eight legs to each biscuit, twisting and pressing onto pan to adhere. Tuck a foil ball under the center of each leg., Spoon filling over biscuits. Fold cheese slices into quarters; place over top. Pat remaining biscuits into 4-in. circles; place over cheese, pressing edges to seal. , Whisk together egg yolk and water; brush over tops. Attach olives for eyes; fill centers with pimientos. Sprinkle with poppy seeds., Bake until golden brown, 15-20 minutes. Serve warm.

8-oz package cream cheese, softened

16-oz package shredded cheese

Black paste food coloring

3.5-oz package round rice crunch crackers (or 24 of any round cracker)

cup chow mein noodles

Steps:

  • Mix 2 tablespoons softened cream cheese with food coloring to tint black. Spoon into a resealable bag; set aside. Beat remaining cream cheese with all but 1 cup of the shredded cheese until blended. Shape mixture into 1 1/4-inch balls. Place remaining shredded cheese in a shallow bowl. Roll balls in cheese to coat. Place one ball on a cracker. Insert 8 chow mein noodles into each ball as legs of the spider. Snip a very small corner from the bag with black cream cheese., then pipe eyes on each spider.

    1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare baking sheet with parchment paper or cooking spray and set aside.
    2. Combine cheese, ham, onion, butter and mustard. Mix until well incorporated.
    3. Cut each breadstick into four equal lengths. Twist and form into spider legs.
    4. Slice biscuits in halves, horizontally. Attach spider legs to the bottom of each biscuit.
    5. Scoop ham and cheese filling onto biscuits and replace biscuit tops.
    6. Make egg wash by beating egg until the yolk and white are well combined. Brush egg wash over the tops and legs of each spider.
    7. Sprinkle each spider with a pinch of poppy seeds and place sliced olives as eyes.
    8. Bake until filling is thoroughly heated through and dough has slightly browned.
