DOUGH BALLS WITH GARLIC BUTTER RECIPE | BBC GOOD FOOD

Dough balls with garlic butter recipe | BBC Good Food image

Serve a platter of warm dough balls with plenty of garlic butter. This easy recipe makes a great sharing-style starter for family and friends

Provided by Lulu Grimes

Categories     Starter

Total Time 50 minutes

Prep Time 20 minutes

Cook Time 30 minutes

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 8

50g butter
300g strong white bread flour
7g sachet dried yeast
1 tbsp caster sugar
oil, for the bowl and baking sheet
100g butter
1 garlic clove, crushed
crudités and cured meat, to serve (optional)

Steps:

  • Warm 175ml water in a saucepan until steaming, then add the butter and set aside to cool until warm but not hot. Mix the flour, yeast, sugar and 1 tsp salt in a large bowl or tabletop mixer. Add the cooled water and mix to make a soft dough. Knead for 10 mins by hand, or for 5 mins in a mixer, until the dough feels bouncy and smooth. Return to a clean, oiled bowl and cover with oiled cling film. Leave somewhere warm to rise for 1½-2 hrs, or until doubled in size.
  • Oil a baking sheet. Knock the air out of the dough and knead again for several mins. Take a small piece of dough (about the size of a walnut) and roll it into a ball. Place the ball on the baking sheet and repeat with the remaining dough, spacing the dough balls about ½ cm apart. Cover and leave to rise for 30 mins. Meanwhile, to make the garlic butter, melt the butter in a pan, then stir in the garlic. Season.
  • Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. The dough balls should be almost touching by now. Bake for 25-30 mins until cooked through. Brush with some of the garlic butter and leave to cool for 5 mins. Serve with the remaining garlic butter and a selection of crudités and cured meat, if you like.

SPINACH BALLS RECIPE - FOOD.COM

Spinach Balls Recipe - Food.com image

I got this recipe from my mother-in-law, who says these were my veggie-hating husband's favorite childhood snack. They are a great way to get kids to eat spinach!! Prep time includes chill time. This can be a little salty depending on the butter, cheese and bread crumbs you use, if you are concerned about saltiness use unsalted butter and garlic powder in place of the garlic salt. I have also made these with only 1/2 cup of melted butter (1 stick) and they are just as good but you need to spray the cookie sheet because they will stick.

Total Time 2 hours 30 minutes

Prep Time 2 hours 10 minutes

Cook Time 20 minutes

Yield 2 dozen, 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 (10 ounce) boxes frozen spinach, drained well
3/4 cup melted unsalted butter
1 medium onion, finely chopped
4 eggs
1/2 cup fresh grated parmesan cheese
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 cups seasoned bread crumbs

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine all ingredients until well mixed.
  • Roll into 2 inch, walnut-sized balls.
  • Chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours.
  • Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 350ºF for 20 minutes.

POLVORONES: GROUND WALNUT COOKIES RECIPE | MARCELA ...
Polvo means powder in Spanish, which is exactly what these crumbly and buttery cookies turn into in your mouth. My mom made polvorones for us every Christmas. These melt-in-your-mouth Mexican wedding cookies are very easy to prepare and are the perfect accompaniment for a warm cup of after-dinner coffee, or for dipping in hot chocolate as I did when I was a child.

Transfer the sugar-coated cookies to a rack to cool completely. (The cookies can be prepared 2 days ahead. Store in an airtight container at room temperature). Sift additional powdered sugar over the cookies, if desired, before serving.

WALNUT CRESCENTS | SOUTHERN LIVING
These snowy crescent-shaped cookies will look lovely nestled in your holiday cookie tins, and taste as good as they look. Cookies of this type (like Mexican wedding cookies or Pecan Snowballs) are chewy and still slightly crisp—and can often be dry. But these cookies are moist and tender inside with a delicious nutty flavor that is balanced perfectly with the sweetness from the powdered sugar. We love the rich flavor of toasted walnuts, but you can substitute toasted pecans or even pistachios. Once you've made the dough and formed the cookies into crescents, be sure to place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. While it might be tempting to just coat your cookie sheets with cooking spray, the parchment paper will keep the cookies from sticking. When the cookies are done baking, let them cool for one minute (they should be cool enough to handle, but still warm to the touch) before rolling them in powdered sugar. When the cookies are still warm, the sugar will adhere better and create a powdery, snowy look.

DATE AND WALNUT COOKIES RECIPE - NYT COOKING
This recipe comes from “Treasured Recipes Old and New 1975,” a community cookbook by the Schuyler-Brown Homemakers Extension in Iowa Falls. It was contributed by Wilma Miller, who credits the recipe to her great-aunt. Ms. Miller wrote that the original recipe called for two pounds of walnuts, but that she prefers it with pecans “and not that many.” That makes sense. Mixing in even a pound of nuts requires the arms of a sturdy farm wife. The recipe yields enough for an entire church supper.

  • Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Unwrap (if chilled) and bake for 25-30 mins until the nuts are a little darker and the balls have firmed up slightly – they will be softer than traditional stuffing balls but will firm up after a few mins cooling. If you’re cooking from frozen, bake for 35-40 mins.
