1 (750 milliliter) bottle red wine (such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Beaujolais, or Burgundy)
2 cups apple juice
3 tablespoons honey
3 cinnamon sticks
10 pods cardamom pods
8 whole cloves
½ teaspoon anise seed

Steps:

  • Stir red wine, apple juice, honey, cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, cloves, and anise together in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Simmer until flavors blend, at least 10 minutes.

1 (12 ounce) package fresh cranberries
1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
1 cup brown sugar
½ cup red wine
1 cinnamon stick
2 whole star anise pods
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 dash ground cloves

Steps:

  • Mix cranberries, orange juice, and brown sugar in a saucepan over low heat. Bring to a simmer; cook and stir until sugar has dissolved, about 5 minutes. Add wine, cinnamon, star anise, nutmeg, and cloves. Mix well. Continue simmering until sauce starts to thicken, about 10 minutes.
