TAHO: DELICIOUS FILIPINO DESSERT MADE FROM TOFU



Taho: Delicious Filipino Dessert Made from Tofu image

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 cup sago pearls, dried
½ cup dark brown sugar
One package (14 oz) silken tofu
½ cup of filtered water
1 cup dark brown sugar

Steps:

  • Pour 5 cups of filtered water into a heavy-bottomed pot. Bring the water to a boil.
  • Once the pot of filtered water is boiling, add in the dried sago pearls. Stir to prevent pearls from sticking together. Soft boil the mixture for approximately 40 minutes.
  • At this point, the pearls should look smooth and gelatinous. Reduce the heat to simmer and cook for another 15 minutes, or until pearls are soft and chewy.
  • Add in dark brown sugar and continue to simmer until the sugar has dissolved.
  • Remove the mixture from the heat. Allow the tapioca pearls to soak in the sugar mixture for 15-20 minutes.
  • Taste the pearls to ensure you've achieved the right texture. The pearls should be soft and fully cooked. If they're still chewy, continue to simmer until softened.
  • As your mixture cools, the syrup thickens. Keep the tapioca mixture warm until you're ready to assemble the rest of the dish.
  • Steam the silken tofu for 10 minutes until cooked throughout in a steamer basket over a boiling pot.
  • Remove the tofu from your steamer basket and allow to cool slightly. Set tofu aside.
  • In a small saucepot, bring the filtered water and brown sugar to a boil.
  • Reduce heat to medium and simmer the mixture until the brown sugar has dissolved.
  • Remove the syrup from the heat and allow to cool slightly.
  • Steep vanilla leaves or pandan in arnibal for extra flavor. Alternatively, you can use a small amount of pandan or vanilla extract.
  • Scoop up thin layers of the steamed silken tofu with a slotted spoon and place them in a serving dish. A narrow glass works well so that you can see the beautiful layers.
  • Drizzle 1 to 2 tsp of arnibal over the tofu.
  • Follow with a small scoop of the tapioca.
  • Repeat layering until you've filled your serving dish.
  • Serve and enjoy your Taho!

Tofu Pudding Recipe: Silky, Smooth, and Sweet image

6 oz of silken tofu
1 1/2 c of soy milk
1/3 c of boiling water
0.4 oz of gelatin powder
5 Tbsp of honey
1/2 tsp of almond extract
1/2 lb of fresh strawberries
1 Tbsp of honey
splash of lemon juice
Mint leaves, strawberries, or other berries for garnishing

Steps:

  • Dissolve the gelatin powder into boiling water. This can be done in a large bowl, using a whisk.
  • If your silken tofu is too watery, use a tofu press to squeeze out the excess moisture.
  • When you're happy with the texture, slice the silken tofu into small pieces.
  • Place your sliced tofu into a food processor, add in honey and soy milk. Blend until well combined.
  • Dump the ingredients into a large bowl, and pour in your dissolved gelatin and almond extract.
  • Gently mix the ingredients using a whisk.
  • Pour the mixture into ramekins and leave them to set up in the refrigerator for 1 hr.
  • While the mixture is setting in the fridge, begin making the strawberry sauce.
  • Place the strawberries, honey, and lemon juice into a food processor and blend together until silky smooth.
  • Remove your tofu pudding from the refrigerator and run a knife gently around the edges to loosen them.
  • Place the sweet tofu dessert onto a plate and remove the ramekin.
  • Pour over your strawberry sauce.
  • Add extra strawberries or fresh mint to complete your soft tofu dessert recipes.
  • Serve and enjoy!
