Curry with small shrimps/prawns

Number Of Ingredients 20

1 lb Prawns (cleaned and deviened)
2 nos Onion (medium)
1 no Tomato (large)
1 glass Water
Coriander leaves (A big bunch)
4 nos Green chillies (adjust according to the hotness of chillies. i use thai chillies which are very spicy.)
1 sprig Curry leaves
Ginger (garlic paste - 2 tsp)
1 1/4 tsp Salt
1/4th tsp Turmeric
1 tsp Chilly powder
3 tsp Coriander powder
1 tsp Cumin powder
1/4 tsp Cumin seeds (Jeerakam)
4 tbsp Oil (2.5 tbsp for curry and 1.5 for cooking prawns)
1 tsp Cumin seeds
1 no Cardamom (Elakka)
2 nos Cloves (Grambu)
1 inch Cinnamon (Karugapatta)
1 tsp Poppy seeds (Khashakhasha)

Steps:

  • Clean the prawns and add 1/8th tsp turmeric and 1/4 tsp salt and leave aside for 5 mins.
  • After 5 mins, squeeze the prawns little by little in your palms tightly to extract the water and drain and discard the water obtained from it and keep the prawns aside.
  • Heat 1.5 tsp of oil in a pan.
  • Cook the prawns for around 5 mins until the water is evaporated to 90%.
  • Switch off the stove and keep the prawns aside.
  • Heat 2.5 tbsp of oil in a pan.
  • Add 1 tsp of cumin seeds, curry leaves and green chillies followed by half bunch cilantro leaves.
  • Add the minced onions.
  • Add salt and turmeric and fry them until golden brown (until the oil separates).
  • Add cumin powder, coriander powder and chilly powder followed by the cooked prawns. Saute them for 3 - 4 mins.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes and stir and cook for 4 mins.
  • Cover and cook until 90% of moisture is evaporated.
  • At this stage, add the prepared garam masala powder and saute for a minute.
  • Add 1 glass of water. Mix well.
  • Cover and cook for 10 mins(until oil separates from the curry).
  • Add the remaining half bunch of cilantro leaves.
  • Switch off the stove and leave it covered for 10 mins.
  • :- Serve hot with plain rice or chappathis.
  • :- This curry can be prepared with large or tiger prawns too, but adjust the water, and increase the cooking time. We normally buy only small prawns bcoz they taste better than large ones and our kids call them baby prawns.

Steps:

  • Before starting, if you are using fresh prawns make sure to dehydrate them by cooking them on heat until the water evaporates and prawns turns light pink in colour. 1. In a cooking pan, heat oil. Add Jeera, Red chillies amp; Curry leaves and let them splatter. 2. Chop the onions small and add them to tadka. 3. Once the onions change colour, add Green chillies and Ginger garlic paste. Fry for 2-3 mins. 4. Add spices - Chilli powder, Turmeric powder, Salt and Garam Masala and fry for few more mins 5. Add Prawns and mix well. Fry for 5 mins 6. Add half glass water and close the lid. Let it cook for 7-10 mins. Thats it!
