The iconic Roy Rogers is a great example of a mixed drink that is universally appealing and simple. Although it’s not particularly exciting, a classic nonalcoholic drink is little more than flavored cola, though it is so refreshing and delicious that you’ll gladly drink it. In the same vein as the Shirley Temple, the Roy Rogers is a soda shop drink from the old days. Soda fountains remained an integral part of American culture even as they closed. Nonalcoholic mixed drinks of this type could be ordered at just about any bar or restaurant long before the term “mocktail” came into use. It is sometimes called a cherry soda; the Roy Rogers does not have a cherry flavor. It is actually the pomegranate that gives grenadine its flavor. Fruity colas have a fruity sweetness, and it’s fun to put a few things into the drink to make it a little more enjoyable.
