Bakes it's own chocolate sauce. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. My mom made this for years and I just found the recipe.

1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons baking powder
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
2 tablespoons oil
1 cup brown sugar
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 3/4 cups hot water

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Mix all ingredients except the brown sugar and 4 tbsp cocoa and hot water. Spread into a 9x9 pan or equivalent.
  • Mix brown sugar and cocoa and spread over batter.
  • Carefully pour the hot water over all.
  • Bake at 350°F for approximately 40 minutes.

This is a recipe I had at a German friends' house. As the title suggests, it's a sauce poured over dense white cake, like a pound cake or stale old cake, to give it a second life.

2 tablespoons butter
½ cup brown sugar
1 cup hot water

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Slowly stir the brown sugar into the butter, allowing it to melt completely. Bring to a boil and cook until the sugar caramelizes and gives off a burnt smell, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and pour the hot water into the saucepan; mix until combined. You will have a sauce that is very liquid. Pour over pieces of cake and serve immediately. Best for stale white cake.

For the caramel sauce I use my own recipe of recipe #176729 - this is the only one I have used so I don't know how any others would work BUT DO NOT USE commercial caramel sauce toppings made for icecream the are to thin, you will end up with a yukky cake.
