Homemade Apple Bar Recipe made with canned apples image

Apple Bars with a homemade flaky crust, made with Paisley Farm cinnamon apples, drizzled with glaze while they are still warm.  One of my most favorite fall treats!

Cook Time 45 minutes

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 1/2 cups flour + 2Tablespoons
Pinch of Salt
1 Tablespoon sugar
1 cup shortening
1 egg, divided yolk/white
2/3 cup milk
1 (35.5 ounce) jar Paisley Farm Apples with Cinnamon
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 Tablespoon milk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.
  • In a bowl combine flour, sugar, salt and shortening with a pastry blender or your hands until it's all incorporated.
  • Add the egg yolk to a measuring cup, then add enough milk to make 2/3 cup. Whisk together.
  • Pour the egg/milk mixture into the flour mixture and combine with your hands. Dough will be a little sticky.
  • Make two equally sized balls of dough.
  • Flour your surface, and roll out one dough ball a little bigger than your 9x13 cookie sheet. Careflully lay it into the cookie sheet and press into the edges.
  • Drain Paisely Farm Apples, and toss with 2 Tablespoons flour until coated.
  • Lay the apples in an even layer into the bottom crust.
  • Roll out the top crust the same as the bottom, lay it on top of the apples. Seal and form your crust edges.
  • Poke a few holes to vent your crust, then whisk the egg white together with about a teaspoon of water. Brush the crust.
  • Bake for 30 minutes at 300 degrees. Turn oven up to 375 degrees and bake for 15 minutes longer, or until crust is golden brown.
  • Whisk together the powdered sugar, vanilla and milk to make glaze. After the bars have cooled slightly, but are still warm, drizzle glaze over the bars. Let set.
  • Cut into squares and enjoy!

Candied Apple Rings or Slices Recipe - Food.com image

I came up with this recipe to try and duplicate the apple rings that I used to have when I was growing up.

Prep Time 15 minutes

Cook Time 20 minutes

Number Of Ingredients 4

8 apples, peeled and cored
2 cups water
1 cup sugar
4 ounces red cinnamon candies

Steps:

  • Slice the apples into thin rings.
  • In a dutch oven or soup kettle put the water, sugar and red cinnamon candies.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce heat to medium, stirring occasionally.
  • When the cinnamon candies have dissolved, add the apple rings.
  • Simmer for 15 minutes on lowish heat until the apples are tender.
  • While the apples are simmering, about every 5 minutes gently stir the mixture.
  • When the apples are cooked, turn off the heat and allow the apples to cool in the syrup.
  • They will continue to darken in color as they sit in the syrup.
  • Serve either chilled or at room temperature.

  • 1. Prepare a water bath canner. 2. Prepare apples for canning by peeling the fruit and then cutting it into uniform slices (approximately 1/2 inch thick). 3. As you work, place the peeled and sliced apple pieces into a bowl of cool water with a generous splash of lemon juice to prevent browning (or dissolve 1/2 teaspoon absorbic acid into 8 cups of cool water). 4. Bring a pot of your preferred canning liquid to a boil (see note below on canning liquids). 5. Remove apple slices from water and drain off any excess liquid. 6. Carefully add the apple slices to the boiling canning liquid and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are heated through. Be sure to stir gently, so that the apple slices don't fall apart. 7. Pack the apples into canning jars, being mindful to leave 1/2 inch headspace. Ladle canning liquid over the top of the apple slices while maintaining a 1/2 inch headspace. 8. De-bubble canning jars and make any final headspace adjustments before capping the jars with 2 part canning lids. 9. Process the jars in a water bath canner for 20 minutes for both pints and quarts. (Recipe is written for a 7-quart canner batch below 1000 feet in elevation, see notes for other batch sizes and elevations). 10. Once the canning time is complete, remove the jars and cool on a towel on the counter. After 24 hours, check seals and store any unsealed jars in the refrigerator for immediate use. Sealed jars of properly canned apple slices will maintain peak quality in the pantry for 12 to 18 months.
