Water, vegetable oil and egg whites called for on cake mix box
1 container Betty Crocker™ Whipped fluffy white frosting
Red food color
1/2 cup round pink and orange candy melts or coating wafers (3 oz)

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Spray bottoms and sides of two 9- or 8-inch round cake pans with baking spray with flour.
  • Make, bake and cool cake mix as directed on box for two 9- or 8-inch round pans.
  • Tint 1/3 cup of the frosting with 1 or 2 drops food color for desired shade of pink.
  • On serving plate, place 1 cake layer, rounded side down; spread pink frosting over layer almost to edge. Top with second layer, rounded side up. Frost side and top of cake with remaining frosting.
  • Insert candies into frosting on side and top of cake as desired. Store loosely covered.

3 8- or 9-inches baked round cake layers (any flavor)
4?½ - 5 cup desired frosting (any flavor)
8 ounces white rolled fondant icing (about one-third of a 24-ounce package)
Blue, red, and yellow paste food colorings
Powdered sugar

Steps:

  • Place one cake layer, bottom side up, on a serving plate. Spread with frosting. Top with second cake layer, bottom side up; spread with frosting. Top with remaining cake layer, bottom side down. Spread top and sides of the cake with frosting.
  • Divide fondant into three portions. Knead a different food coloring into each portion until color is evenly distributed.* (Keep fondant covered with plastic wrap when not using.) On a flat surface lightly dusted with powdered sugar, roll out yellow fondant, one portion at a time, to 1/4-inch thickness. Using a 1-inch round cutter,** cut out enough circles to go around the base of the cake, leaving about 1 inch between circles; press circles into cake. Roll out blue portion of fondant to 1/4-inch thickness. Using a 1 1/2- to 2-inch round cutter,** cut out the same number of circles as the yellow circles. Press blue circles into sides of cake just above yellow circles. Repeat with red portion of dough, cutting circles with the 1-inch round cutter** and pressing into cake just above blue circles. If desired, place the Birthday Banner.
