Best Homemade Apple Sauce Recipe - The Pioneer Woman image

This apple sauce recipe is the easiest, most delicious treat you can make to have as a snack, condiment, or an ingredient for other meals.

Number Of Ingredients 6

6 lb.

apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 8 slices

1 c.

apple juice or apple cider

Juice of 1 lemon

1/2 c.

brown sugar, packed

1 tsp.

cinnamon, more or less to taste

Optional ingredients: Nutmeg, maple syrup, allspice, butter, to taste

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a large pot and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 25 minutes.  Carefully puree in a food processor or blender (don't fill too full; split into two portions if needed) until smooth. Store in the fridge and serve by itself, over pork chops, over ice cream, over pancakes...or any place where applesauce is needed!

2 1/2 cups warm water
1 package dry yeast
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 stick softened butter
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups wheat flour
1 1/2 cups rolled oats
4 cups bread machine flour

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine all ingredients, knead for about seven minutes or until dough is no longer wet but smooth. Let bread rise until doubled in size, punch down and shape into loaves. Let bread double in size again. Bake until crusty and brown on top.

  • Select a couple of small-ish pumpkins. Cut the pumpkin in half. With a spoon or a scoop, scrape out the seeds and pulp from the center. You don't have to be too thorough with this. Place all the seeds into a bowl (you can roast them later and make pepitas). Repeat until all the pumpkin pieces are largely free of seeds and pulp. Place pumpkin pieces on a baking sheet (face up or face down; I’ve done both) and roast in a 350-degree oven for 45 minutes, or until pumpkin is fork-tender. They should be nice and light golden brown when done. Peel off the skin from the pumpkin pieces until you have a big pile of the stuff. If you have a food processor, throw in a few chunks at a time. A blender will work, too, if you add a little water. Or you can simply mash it up with a potato masher, or move it through a potato ricer, or process it through a food mill.  Pulse the pumpkin until smooth. If it looks too dry, add in a few tablespoons of water during the pulsing to give it the needed moisture. (Note, if the puree is overly watery, you should strain it on cheesecloth or over a fine mesh strainer to get rid of some of the liquid.) Dump the pureed goodness into a bowl, and continue pureeing until all the pumpkin is done.  You can either use this immediately in whatever pumpkin recipe you’d like, store it in the freezer for later use. To store in the freezer, spoon about 1 cupful of pumpkin into each plastic storage bag. Seal the bag with just a tiny bit of an opening remaining, then use your hands to flatten out the pumpkin inside the bag and push out the air. Store them in the freezer until you need them.

  • Core the apples. Cut into wedges and place the pieces in a medium saucepot. (No need to peel the apples.) Add apple cider vinegar, salt, and water. Set the pot over medium heat. Cover, leaving a little space open for the pot to vent, and simmer for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Turn off heat when apples are extremely tender and most of the liquid has evaporated. Place apple mash and liquid in a food mill set over a large bowl. Grind the apples into a fine sauce. Discard the peels. (Don’t have a food mill? Peel the apples before cooking, and then puree the apple mash in the blender!) Place apple sauce back into the original pot. Set back over medium heat and add sugar, spices, and vanilla. Simmer, stirring every couple minutes, until sauce thickens and turns dark brown, about 15 minutes. Cool, then store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks, or can for long-term storage. Makes 4 to 5 cups, depending on how much you cook it down.
