PIE-IRON PIZZA (GIRL SCOUT CAMPOUT) RECIPE - FOOD.COM

Pie-Iron Pizza (Girl Scout Campout) Recipe - Food.com image

This was a little something my best friends and I sort of started when we were all one big (5-person) Girl Scout troop. They're really great for campouts and are especially good on cold days. You will need a pie-iron and a fire outdoors in order to make this one.

Total Time 7 minutes

Prep Time 5 minutes

Cook Time 2 minutes

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 (8 ounce) jar pizza sauce
1 loaf bread
1 (12 tablespoon) package butter
1 (12 ounce) package of shredded mozzarella cheese
sliced pepperoni

Steps:

  • Take two slices of bread and butter on one side on each slice.
  • Put each slice into the individual pie-irons, buttered-side down.
  • On the non-buttered side of one of the bread slices, take a spoonful of the pizza sauce and spread over the bread. Be careful not to put too much sauce on, or you'll end up with huge mess.
  • Sprinkle mozeralla cheese over the sauce and take a slice or two of pepperoni and put those on top of the the cheese.
  • Close up the pie-iron tightly and stick it into the fire pit. Make sure you have the iron in a hot part of the fire and keep the grip handle out far enough that it won't get too hot and burn your hands when you have to remove it.
  • Cook the pie-iron pizza for two minutes. Depending on circumstances, you may have to cook them longer or not, but two minutes usually does the trick. Then you're done and you can remove the pie-iron. Make sure to check that the pizza bread is a golden brown on the outside, like it's been toasted. Then let it sit for a few minutes to cool off.

  • "1. This is best prepared in a sandwich maker, but can be prepared like a grilled cheese. Also, you can put whatever pizza toppings you want inside, just make sure not to load it too full or the sandwich won’t seal around the edges properly. 2. Butter the outsides of the two slices of bread (the sides that will touch the sandwich maker). Spread pizza sauce on the inside of the bread, just as you would spread mayo on a sandwich. 3. Lay once slice in the sandwich maker, butter-side down. 4. Lay pepperonis on top of the sauce in a layer so that the next pepperoni half-way overlays the last. Make sure the toppings don’t over stretch the edge of the bread. You want the sandwich maker to be able to press all edges of the sandwich together, bread-to-bread. This will help to keep all toppings inside the sandwich and form a tightly sealed pocket. 5. Put a layer of mozzarella cheese on top, but not too much. Otherwise it will cause the sandwich to not seal all the way and cheese will ooze out in the sandwich maker and create a mess. 6. Sprinkle the top of the cheese with garlic powder and Italian seasoning. Place remaining slice of bread, pizza sauce-side down. 7. Close sandwich maker tightly and cook until toasted to a golden brown and heated through. Most sandwich makers have a light to indicate when it’s done."
