I LOVE going to the Outback and ordering this side with my steak. I could eat these alone! This is a copycat recipe; one I have had saved but have yet to try. But if this recipe is a true copycat of what I have eaten at Outback, you will not be sorry!

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 (10 1/2 ounce) can beef broth
1/2 cup onion, diced
2 (16 ounce) cans small whole mushrooms, like button mushrooms (plus the juice of one can or jar)
1/3 cup Burgundy wine

Steps:

  • Place beef broth in a saucepan and simmer onion for 15 minutes.
  • Add mushrooms, along with juice from 1 can or jar and wine.
  • Simmer another 15 minutes.
  • Serve with steak.

In a March 1986 story which ran in the Kansas City Times, a feud erupted between Gilbert/Robinson, the parent company of Houlihan's restaurant at the time, and two guys building their own chain of bars called Mike Houlihan's. The president of the Houlihan's chain, Fred Hipp, said that at first Houlihan's didn't mind so much, asking kindly that the name not be used. But when Mike Heyer and John Houlihan opened a Mike Houlihan's in St. Louis only a few blocks away from an original Houlihan's restaurant, Fred saw no choice but to sue. Soon, residents with the surname were writing to Fred urging him to drop the lawsuit. "You'll feel better, thirteen hundred Houlihans will beel better, and two Irishmen will have $50,000 to buy more Irish whiskey," said one letter. Here's another Houlihan's classic recipe called "Shrooms"—cheese-filled, batter-fried mushrooms served piping hot. You have the choice of making the herb-flavored cheese filling from the recipe here, or if you're feeling especially lazy, you can buy a similar premade filling. Be careful when you first bite into these dudes. Straight out of the fryer, the hot cheese filling is like molten lava on your tongue and lips. Consume with care.   • Fill a large deep pot with at least 3 inches of the oil, leaving 2 inches of space at the top. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until a deep-fry thermometer registers 400 degrees. Pat off excess flour from the onion. Using a wire skimmer, carefully lower the onion into the oil, cut-side down. Adjust the heat so the oil temperature stays close to 350 degrees. Fry about 3 minutes, then turn the onion over and cook until golden, about 3 more minutes; drain on paper towels. Season with salt and serve with the dip.
