Steps:
- Combine the brown sugar, butter, salt and hot water in 5 quart slow cooker. Add cinnamon sticks and cloves. Cover and cook on Low for 5 hours. Stir in rum.
- Ladle from the slow cooker into mugs, and top with whipped cream and a dusting of nutmeg.

- Put the sugar and 100ml water in a pan and heat gently, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Cool. This will make more than you need but will keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks.
- Put 3 tsp of sugar syrup and the bitters in an old fashioned glass and stir until combined. Fill the glass with ice cubes, pour over the bourbon and stir well. Garnish with a twist of orange peel and serve.
