Easy to make and no fuss with rolling them out, plus they have that delightful melt-in-your-mouth texture.

½ cup butter, softened
½ cup shortening
½ cup white sugar
½ cup confectioners' sugar
1 egg
2?¼ cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1?½ teaspoons vanilla extract
½ teaspoon cream of tartar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease baking sheets.
  • Cream butter or margarine, shortening, white sugar and confectioners' sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and the vanilla.
  • Sift the flour, baking soda, salt and cream of tartar together. Add the flour mixture to the sugar mixture and blend.
  • Shape dough into walnut-sized balls and place on the prepared baking sheets. Dip a glass in white sugar and press balls flat. Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned.

This suet will stay together in temperatures up to 115* in the summer months. I use it all year long and all the birds seem to love it ... as do the squirrels.

1 cup(s) lard
1 cup(s) crunchy peanut butter
2 cup(s) quick cooking oatmeal
2 cup(s) yellow cornmeal
1 cup(s) all purpose flour
1/3 cup(s) granulated sugar
1/2 cup(s) ground nuts of your choice

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients thoroughly. Press into a sheet pan and chill. Remove from sheet pan and cut into size to fit your suet feeder. If you do not have a suet feeder cut the suet into pieces about 3" x 3". NOTES: If you can get suet from your grocer, have them grind it up for you and use that in place of or 50/50 with the lard. You can double or triple this recipe and freeze your blocks. Trust me, the birds are going to love this and want more! This suet will stay together in temperatures up to 115* in the summer months.
