Instant Pot Great Northern Beans - Practical Self Reliance image

Quick and easy instructions for cooking great northern beans in an instant pot. With or without soaking.

2 cups great northern beans, unsoaked
8 cups stock, broth or water
1 tsp sea salt
1 tbsp parsley
1 tsp thyme
1 tsp marjoram
1 pinch sage

Steps:

  • Add liquid, beans, salt and spices to the inner pot of a standard instant pot. Give it a stir to make sure everything is distributed. If the beans have been soaked, use 3/4 as much water.
  • Seal the instant pot and set the vent to sealing.
  • Pressure cook on high for 32 to 35 minutes for un-soaked beans. For soaked beans, cook 20 to 22 minutes. Allow the pot to naturally depressurize.

1 pound dried beans, rinsed and stones removed
cold water to cover
6 cups water

Steps:

  • Pour beans into the steel inner pot of a pressure cooker and cover with cold water by about 1 inch. Lock pressure cooker lid in place and set steam vent to Sealing. Select Pressure Cook and cook for 1 minute on High Pressure. Set steam vent handle to Venting to quick-release pressure. Pour beans into a colander and rinse under cold water. Discard the cooking liquid and rinse out the steel pot. Pour the soaked beans back into the same pot and add 6 cups water.  Lock pressure cooker lid in place and set steam vent to Sealing. Select Pressure Cook and cook for 15 minutes on High Pressure. Let pressure release naturally.
