Buttermilk Pound Cake with Custard Sauce Recipe | MyRecipes image

We sampled this traditional pairing several different ways and loved them all, but our favorite was warm cake with chilled custard.

Yield Makes 12 servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

1?? cups butter, softened
2?½ cups sugar
6 large eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
½ cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Buttermilk Custard Sauce

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325°. Beat butter at medium speed with a heavy-duty electric stand mixer until creamy. Gradually add sugar, beating at medium speed until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating just until blended after each addition.
  • Add flour to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat at low speed just until blended after each addition. Stir in vanilla. Pour batter into a greased and floured 10-inch (12-cup) tube pan.
  • Bake at 325° for 1 hour and 5 minutes to 1 hour and 10 minutes or until a long wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack 10 to 15 minutes; remove from pan to wire rack, and cool completely (about 1 hour). Serve with Buttermilk Custard Sauce as desired.

This recipe has been in the family for generations. I'm not surprised at its popularity, because it can be used in a variety of ways. We especially like it served over pound cake and gingerbread or simply topped with fresh strawberries.

Yield about 8-1/2 cups.

8 cups milk
2 cups sugar
6 eggs, beaten
2 tablespoons vanilla extract

Steps:

  • In a heavy saucepan over low heat, cook and stir milk and sugar until sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat. Stir in a small amount of hot milk mixture into eggs; return all to the pan, stirring constantly. Cook and stir until mixture reaches 160° or is thick enough to coat a metal spoon., Remove from the heat; stir in vanilla. Cool to room temperature, stirring several times. Transfer to a bowl; press a piece of waxed paper or plastic wrap on top of custard. Refrigerate. Serve over gingerbread or pound cake.
