These Ornament Cookies are a beautiful decorated cookie to add to your holiday baking list this season. They may look a little complicated, but once you break down the steps--and use the right equipment--they are really quite simple.

- Cut plaque-shape cookies from a chilled sheet of gingerbread dough. Use a paring knife to shape the cookies into ornaments.If you’d like to hang the cookies for decoration, cut a small hole in the top with a decorating tip 5.Bake and cool the cookies according to the recipe instructions.Ice the cookies in different patterns using the 15-second count royal icing and a decorating tip 2. Use the scriber needle or toothpick to help shape the icing. Allow the icing to dry completely, about 8 hours.Place a small amount of white and pink pearl dust into a paint palette or small dishes. Add pink, blue and green pearl dust to the white pearl dust to create pale shades. Add a few drops of vodka or flavored extract to form a paint. Mix well with a soft round brush. Apply the pearl dust mixture to the icing using the soft round brush. The pearl dust paint will be dry within a few minutes.Pipe different patterns using white piping consistency royal icing and a decorating tip 1. Dip the cookies into a dish of granulated sugar. Only work on one small section at a time so that the icing doesn’t dry before you have a chance to dip it into the sugar.If you’d like to hang the cookies for decoration, tie a ribbon through the hole.

- Combine 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar, 1 cup butter, egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla in large bowl. Beat at low speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add flour and baking soda; beat until well mixed.
- Divide dough in half; wrap each half in plastic food wrap. Refrigerate at least 2 hours until firm.
- Heat oven to 375°F.
- Roll out dough on lightly floured surface, one-half at a time (keeping remaining dough refrigerated), to 1/8 to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with 4-inch cookie cutter. Place 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Sprinkle with decorator sugars, if desired. Bake 6-10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.
- While cookies are still warm, use toothpick or straw to make holes for ribbons to hang cookies as ornaments. Cool completely.
- Combine 2 cups powdered sugar, 1/4 cup butter, and 1 teaspoon vanilla in small bowl. Beat at low speed, scraping bowl often and adding enough milk for desired frosting consistency. Tint frosting with food color, if desired. Frost and fill cooled cookies as desired.
