BENNIGAN'S MONTE CRISTO RECIPE | TOP SECRET RECIPES

Bennigan's Monte Cristo Recipe | Top Secret Recipes image

Menu Description: "A delicious combination of ham and turkey, plus Swiss and American cheeses on wheat bread. Lightly battered and fried until golden. Dusted with powdered sugar and served with red raspberry preserves for dipping." It sounds crazy, but it tastes great: a triple-decker ham, turkey, and cheese sandwich is dipped in a tempura-style batter; fried to a golden brown; then served with a dusting of powdered sugar and a side of raspberry preserves. For over ten years tons of cloning requests for this one have stacked up at TSR Central, so it was time for a road trip. There are no Bennigan's in Las Vegas, and since the Bennigan's chain made this sandwich famous, I headed out to the nearest Bennigan's in San Diego. Back home, with an ice chest full of original Monte Cristo sandwiches well-preserved and ready to work with, I was able to come up with this simple clone for a delicious sandwich that is crispy on the outside, and hot, but not greasy, on the inside (the batter prevents the shortening from penetrating). This recipe makes one sandwich, which may be enough for two. If you want to make more, you'll most likely have to make more batter so that any additional sandwiches get a real good dunking. Recently, Bennigan's restaurants across the country have been closing, but with this secret formula you can still experience the taste of the chain's signature sandwich. BENNIGAN'S MONTE CRISTO SANDWICH | JUST A PINCH RECIPES

Bennigan's Monte Cristo Sandwich | Just A Pinch Recipes image

My local Bennigans closed down over a year ago. I used to treat myself to my favorite sandwich of all time - The Monte Cristo. No one made it like they did! Had a craving for one and decided to do some research online and found the recipe! I used honey cured meats instead of just the regular meats and it came out AMAZING!! EXACTLY like the sandwich I would order! So simple and easy to make! Get the restaurant taste without the hefty bill! Try it out tonight and let me know what you think! Bon Appetite! :)

Cook Time 20 minutes

Yield 3

Number Of Ingredients 18

SANDWICH
9 slice(s) whole wheat bread
3 slice(s) honey cured turkey breast (luncheon meat)
3 slice(s) honey cured ham (luncheon meat)
3 slice(s) american cheese (white or yellow - does not matter)
3 slice(s) swiss cheese
BATTER
1 - egg
1 to 1&1/4 cup(s) water
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
1 teaspoon(s) sugar
1 & 1/2 cup(s) flour (all-purpose is fine)
1 tablespoon(s) baking powder
- vegetable oil (for deep frying)
- powdered sugar (for dusting on top)
- toothpicks (4 per sandwich)
DIPPING SAUCE
- raspberry preserves

Steps:

  • Separate the 9 pieces of bread on a cutting board.
  • Put 3 slices of bread aside.
  • Using the remaining 6 slices: On 3 pieces place one slice Turkey and one slice Swiss cheese. On the other 3 slices of bread; place one slice Ham and one slice American cheese.
  • Using the 3 slices of bread you set aside earlier; layer the sandwich. (Should be Turkey/Swiss, bread, then Ham/American layer) Will be a triple decker sandwich. Will make 3 sandwiches.
  • Place a tooth pick in each corner of the sandwiches so the sandwiches will hold together. (4 per sandwich - Total of 12 toothpicks).
  • Crack egg in a medium/large mixing bowl. Add water and beat together until fully mixed.
  • Add salt, sugar, baking powder, and flour and stir until batter is smooth.
  • Dip sandwich in batter. Carefully cover all sides and surfaces. (Make sure every surface of the sandwich is covered in batter or it wont fry right)
  • Carefully place in hot oil.
  • Fry until golden brown (usually 3-5 minutes per side).
  • Once it is golden brown remove from hot oil and place on a paper towel to drain off excess oil.
  • Let cool for a few minutes.
  • Remove the toothpicks.
  • Slice in half, or into fourths.
  • Put on a plate and dust with powdered sugar.
  • Serve with a side of Raspberry preserves for dipping!
  • Enjoy!!! :)
