Basic fritters - Healthy Food Guide image

Let the kids loose in the kitchen to make tasty fritters with their favourite fillings.

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 ½ cups self-raising flour
¼ teaspoon salt
1 cup skim milk
1 egg, lightly beaten
freshly ground black pepper
spray oil

Steps:

  • 1 Sift flour into a bowl and add salt. In a separate bowl, beat milk and egg together. Make a well in the centre of the flour. Add liquid to flour and whisk.
  • 2 Add chosen fritter ingredients (see Tip below) and mix well.
  • 3 Spray a non-stick pan with oil and place over a medium heat. Place spoonfuls of fritter mix in the pan, up to 4 fritters at a time, making sure they are separated from each other.
  • 4 Cook until they are firm, they slide around the pan easily, and small bubbles appear on the surface. Using a spatula, turn over each fritter — the underside should be golden brown. Cook for a further few minutes, spraying with a little extra oil if necessary.

Found this recipe online and I'm posting so I don't lose it before I get a chance to try it out. There are variations for ham, banana, and apple fritters here. Serving size is an estimate as none was given with the original recipe.

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoon melted margarine
1 egg
1/2 cup milk (depending on which type of fritter you choose, see below) or 1/2 cup fruit juice (depending on which type of fritter you choose, see below)
1 dash salt
1 cup minced ham
6 bananas
2 cups diced apples

Steps:

  • For basic fritter batter: Combine flour, baking powder and salt; stir to blend. Add egg and melted margarine; stir until well blended. Add milk (or fruit juice), mix well. Let stand 30 minutes.
  • Ham Fritters: Add minced ham to basic batter. Drop by spoonfuls into hot oil and deep fry.
  • Banana Fritters: Peel and quarter bananas. Dip bananas in batter and saute in margarine until golden brown on all sides.
  • Apple Fritters: Stir apples into basic batter. Drop by spoonfuls into hot oil and deep fry.
  • *Note* You can make peach or apricot fritters by using canned fruit. Use the fruit syrup for the liquid in the basic batter. Dice fruit and mix with batter. Deep fry as for the apple fritters.
